Really why do you think Japanese civilians jumped off cliffs rather than face capture by US Forces. The Pacific War was not a Political Fight it was essentially a Race War.

Because at the time japanese society stated that it was more honorable to die by your own hand than be captured or killed by the hand of your enemy.

Exactly, the US wouldn't cripple it's pacific fleet and then enter into a war they were in the beginning in danger of losing badly just to go "if it ain't white it ain't right".

No, it was not "essentially a Race War", it was nothing close to a race war, it was a war between pro-nazi imperialist japan and all the states and peoples they initiated wars of aggression against.

Once again, the word itself is racist.

How is it racist? The name itself has a number of different etymological origins but it's widely regarded as the Roman name for the tribe known as the Afri which lived in modern day Libya, which was used as an adjective to describe the people living in that particular area. The -ica suffix is Latin for "land" i.e Belgica, Celtica etc. So if we go by the commonly accepted etymological origin, Africa is simply the Latin term for the "land of the Afri tribe".

If you take objection for one society creating a word for a continent whose inhabitants are as diverse as anywhere else in the world, take into consideration that at the time the word essentially was "created" (and largely appeared after the conquest of Carthage by the Romans), no one in Rome had any idea that there was much beyond North Africa owing to the vast expanse of the Sahara Desert.

Interestingly, the OP mentioned that outside of this discussion, you said that there was no word for Africa in native African languages. In tying with the explanation of why the term came about in Latin, these peoples would not have had any concept of "Africa" as an inhabited landmass simply because they didn't have the means to explore it further than outside of traditional pastoral areas where these people lived.

If you're trying to insinuate that it's racist because white Europeans introduced the word into sub-Saharan Africa then at this point I should point out that one of the most widely spoken languages in sub-Saharan Africa, Swahili, is actually a blend of Bantu langauges and Arabic. Would you consider this to be racism, given that Arabic words are not native to Africa?

Actually not a European colonial word, as it was used before any European power colonized Africa - yep, before Alexander. Also colonies do not imply racism (see: Rome).

So is Asia (originally just the Levant). So is Italia (originally just the Southern bit). So is France (originally just the northernmost bits plus Belgium). So is Egypt (originally just the Nile Valley, and locally called Khem btw). So is India (which today stretches a bit more than just the Indus valley).

They jumped off the cliff because the Japanese government told them too. For political reasons, as them being captured would reduce morale.
