Wut? That's insane, the US troops were encouraged to take prisoners and were punished if they didn't. Allied High Command was very interested in getting their hands on as many captured troops from the Japanese as possible considering how suicidally dedicated they were to "going to hell and taking a few with them".

Over the course of about 3-3 1/2 weeks, another player on my regions RMB has fought/debated over the spelling of Africa, or as they choose to spell it, Afrika (When speaking English). They believe that spelling it with a C is racist, due to the fact that invaders from Europe took over Africa and forced English and other European languages on the African people, and in order to avoid racism and completely free Africa from white-supremacy and European control, it should be spelt with a K instead of a C, because C's aren't normal within native African languages.

Now, there are some problems with this, one of them being that the Germans, Dutch, and Belgians all held land in Afrika at one point or another, and in their respective languages (Along with half of Belgium), spell it Afrika. Another problem here is that things are spelt differently in other languages, English only one of the many, many possible spellings of Africa, that's how languages work. So no, I don't think Africa's spelling needs to be changed in English.

But what do you think NSG? Should we let Africa be free and spell it Afrika? Or continue with the white-supremacist ways and spell it with a C? (Also, sorry if the poll's a bit off, still figuring out how to use my new tablet better :\ )

Stupid reasons to spell it with a k.

"Its wascist!"

No, it isn't.

But seriously, spelling it with a k is so much cooler.

In modern English it's Africa. Because it is. We gave up phonetic spelling for preserving Latin spelling.
In middle English it was commonly Affrike. Because copying Latin spelling was less important then.
Africa is a Latin word that we carried over into English. African languages not having c* makes no impact on English.

* (and they adapted the Latin alphabet only lately and so have rational Latinization of their languages. They didn't even use Latin letters until colonization. Why don't they give them all up? )

Really why do you think Japanese civilians jumped off cliffs rather than face capture by US Forces. The Pacific War was not a Political Fight it was essentially a Race War.
Proud advocate that Europe stands stronger together than divided. The EU may be flawed in some areas but the idea of a united Europa can only bring good fortune to Europe and the world. For more than two thousand years, Europe was home to conflicts inspired by coveting one another's territory and resources, even making the continent the home to some of the world's most destructive and costly conflicts. But the idea was all wrong in their minds. Their idea was to bring this territory or that under their flag and spread influence on the continent. The idea they should all have been thinking was that the goal should be to bring the continent under one unified flag.

Hell, people couldn't even spell their own names consistently back then. Catherine of Aragon used at least four different spellings for her signature.

For the same reason thousands of Germans piled into deathtrap ships during the Russian advance. Their own propaganda told their people that the invader would leave no quarter and would rape any girls/women/grannies and kill everyone and their dog regardless of their combatant status.

Ffs the whole reason I brought up racism is that the name is racist regardless of spelling, since it's a European colonial world. The crux of the conversation, however, should be that Africa is the OFFICIAL and PRACTICAL word to describe the continent so it's a waste of time debating.

HQ's orders were for troops to take Japanese prisoners if possible.

The troops themselves were the ones that said "Fuck that, Remember Bataan!" and hosed them with small arms fire.

Yeah, it totally had nothing to do with the Japanese troops telling the civilians "the Yankees are gonna gang rape you if they take you alive".

We call Germany (from Latin Germania) rather than their own name (Deutschland).
We call Africa (from Latin Africa) rather than some hypothetical own name (there's a thousand different names for their land varying by language).
We call Asia (from Latin, from Greek Asia) rather than their own names (again, thousands of languages).

Why should we make an exception for one continent?

Again: the Allied generals wanted Japanese prisoners in order to gain intel; the Allied soldiers didn't give a fuck about taking Japanese prisoners because of the way the Japanese abused Allied POWs, or they figured their surrender attempts were a trick.

But how is it racist?
It originated in the time of Rome. Well before Europe's chattel/race slavery.

Actually not a European colonial word, as it was used before any European power colonized Africa - yep, before Alexander. Also colonies do not imply racism (see: Rome).

Really why do you think Japanese civilians jumped off cliffs rather than face capture by US Forces. The Pacific War was not a Political Fight it was essentially a Race War.

Because at the time japanese society stated that it was more honorable to die by your own hand than be captured or killed by the hand of your enemy.

You think it was a race war? I guess resources, imperialism, and general sentiment had nothing to do with it.

Let me guess "Pearl Harbor was an inside job" too?
