If balkanization is a fear of the British government if they give up the Falklands then the "democratic" concepts they seem to apply are already into question, and the system is nothing but a flimsy concept to claim sovereignty.

You undermined your own argument by implying that balkanization is a fear the United Kingdom and in particular Britain has.

I see what you and HMS Vanguard are getting at.

It's a slippery slope I am describing, to be certain. I certainly don't think it's what UK politicians worry about when the issue comes up.

The fact remains that if the UK recognizes Argentina's claims in spite of the clearly stated will of the Falklands populace, the result is a net negative for the legitimacy of democratic governance, even if it's merely a few flipped seats in parliament and not full-on balkinization.

The UK recognising Argentina's claim against popular disapproval would be an indication that the UK would be more resistant to internal balkanisation, which at present is permitted if enough people support it.
