If this law is for stopping a male from going into the female bathroom and gawking, surely it wouldn't be hard to be more active about making the individual more aware about how to look for hidden cameras, and maybe a bit more pressure on those owning the bathroom to make the stall walls a bit higher? I've seen no reason for the bathroom walls to be open at the bottom and at the top.

Government's size is determined by how much money they spend on poor lazy people, and freedom is the amount of personal prejudices you can enforce without government interference, Ifreann.

But the sexual predators will be everywhere :o

Not if you have those fancy stalls that are basically just separate rooms. At that point, it becomes a bunch of tiny little bathrooms and a giant room full of a bunch of sinks. My only problem with letting straight cis people enter the restroom of the opposite sex because "Trust me, I'm transgender" is that all the public restrooms save for ones in very well-funded buildings have stalls with doors that just barely shield your crotch from everyone outside. If people could bite the bullet and buy some actual doors, there would be no problem with any of this. Would probably be cheaper in the long run too.

The session, which was abruptly convened by Republican lawmakers on Tuesday, came in response to an antidiscrimination ordinance approved by the state’s largest city, Charlotte, last month. That ordinance provided protections based on sexual orientation, gender expression and gender identity, including letting transgender people use the public bathrooms that correspond with their gender identity, not gender at birth.

The state bill, put together so quickly that many lawmakers had not seen it before it was introduced Wednesday morning, specifically bars people in North Carolina from using bathrooms that do not match their birth gender, and goes further to prohibit municipalities from creating their own antidiscrimination policies. Instead, it creates a statewide antidiscrimination policy — one that does not mention gay and transgender people.

I fail to see how this does anything but support my argument

EDIT: Fine, I concede defeat here. I was wrong.

They really aren't especially if they didn't partake in surgery or hormones at a young age. I am not convinced the policies would be impossible to enforce.

The same way sex segregation currently works. Someone either sees you go into a bathroom they think you ought not to be going into or someone inside complains. I think that sex segregation is the issue and focusing on other things is probably missing the point.

Yeah, could we just do that? That'd be great. You should see some of the stalls at the buildings on the NC State Fairgrounds. I swear, people can see up to your stomach through those.

If I was arguing that no transgender person made a convincing transition that would be totally relevant. I am saying that those results are not the norm.

So I was correct then.

Furthermore;

North Carolina
Statute: N.C. Gen. Stat. §§ 130A-118(b)(4), (e) (2005).

Text: (b) A new certificate of birth shall be made by the State Registrar when . . .

(4) A written request from an individual is received by the State Registrar to change the sex on that individual's birth record because of sex reassignment surgery, if the request is accompanied by a notarized statement from the physician who performed the sex reassignment surgery or from a physician licensed to practice medicine who has examined the individual and can certify that the person has undergone sex reassignment surgery.

Because people are totally going to present their birth certificate when they want to use a toilet.

There's also no fucking reason for an inch and a half of space between the door and the stall.

Some states have arbitrary bullshit laws demanding you live as your preferred gender publically for a certain time.

The men's and women's bathrooms correspond to sex, not gender. That's why they're different because of the plumbing they're designed to handle, not they're color scheme. The sooner people get this in their heads, the sooner we can put this behind us.

I guess I'll just remind everyone that this bill nullifies anti-discrimination laws passed by local governments beneath the NC state government. It's not specifically trying to enforce any laws prohibiting transgenders from using whatever restroom they want.

Here[pdf] is the text of the bill. Rather looks to me like the section added to Article 37 of Chapter 115C of the General Statutes and the new Chapter 81 of Article 143 do prohibit trans people from using bathrooms based on their gender identity.

But most trans women aren't going to be using the urinals anyway.

Another red state hates equal rights. More at 11.
While she had no regrets about throwing the lever to douse her husband's mistress in molten gold, Blanche did feel a pang of conscience for the innocent bystanders whose proximity had caused them to suffer gilt by association.
