Making it even more weirdly ritualistic with a salute is kind of a step in the wrong direction.
Making kids salute a flag as if they were soldiers and having them pledge their allegiance to a government as if they were elected officials is already a goosestep complete with jackboots.

The pledge should be restored and the words 'under god' removed. Those words were inserted during the 50s during the Red Scare.
Also, the words 'in god we trust' should be removed from the currency and the national motto restored to 'e pluribus unum' rather than 'in god we trust'. Those changes also took place in the 1950s and should be reverted.
Why would a country want to put a fictional figure in a pledge, on currency and in a motto anyway?
