I used to read Weird US a lot, and in the book for PA they said how whenever it snowed, Centralia would always remain clear because the heat melted all the snow, so it was just like a town untouched while everything around it was covered. Plus, IIRC, the coal under Centralia is anthracite, which is one of the purest forms of coal in the world. It burns very hot and long.

they are interesting, the pine barrens in jersey have a few, and in bear mountain park they have one, but it was only abandoned about 50 years ago.

It's eerie, to look at photos or video of them. Especially when you can still find stuff strewn around, stuff that attests to people having lived there before... BTW, do people go into Willowbrook still to check it out?

Yeah, and they don't know which ways the fire might be burning at this point because with anthracite, the fire can even burn upside down.

According to people like Donna Cotugno and Joshua Zeman, there's a whole underground community living under the Willowbrook tunnel system. Mostly, according to them, composed of former Willowbrook patients.
