I'm amazed that people still bother to live out there. I used to read Weird US a lot, and in the book for PA they said how whenever it snowed, Centralia would always remain clear because the heat melted all the snow, so it was just like a town untouched while everything around it was covered. Pretty spooky.

Well, some of the fire is very close to the surface. I think the main road leading to Centralia had to be closed because of subsiding caused by the heat from the coal fire. Plus, IIRC, the coal under Centralia is anthracite, which is one of the purest forms of coal in the world. It burns very hot and long.

they are interesting, the pine barrens in jersey have a few, and in bear mountain park they have one, but it was only abandoned about 50 years ago.
The West won the world not by the superiority of its ideas or values or religion … but rather by its superiority in applying organized violence. Westerners often forget this fact; non-Westerners never do.

I think I read that the coal would likely still be burning a hundred years from now, maybe even more, because the vein that's on fire may be quite large.

It's eerie, to look at photos or video of them. Especially when you can still find stuff strewn around, stuff that attests to people having lived there before... BTW, do people go into Willowbrook still to check it out?

Yeah, and they don't know which ways the fire might be burning at this point because with anthracite, the fire can even burn upside down.

I wish I had a litre bottle of blended scotch so I could down the whole thing tonight and maybe not have to wake up in the morning. Alas, I'm not that lucky.

You'd wake up in the evening instead and whatever it is would still be there/have happened/be pending (delete as appropriate). Just have a nip of Sherry or Brandy before bed to calm your nerves.
Read "A Man For All Seasons". That explains most of what I believe in. Except the Catholic bits.

Outside of here I do lead a rather unusual and colourful life. As a Spinster.

I just want a nice man with a good accent and the manners of a Royal.

According to people like Donna Cotugno and Joshua Zeman, there's a whole underground community living under the Willowbrook tunnel system. Mostly, according to them, composed of former Willowbrook patients.
