They're a bunch of left wing nerds who don't understand Guy Fawkes that want to dish out the bullying they were/are given in order to feel like they have some sort of power and control, when really, they are annoying.

Oh goodie, another one of these threads. Second verse, same as the first:

It is impossible to formulate a single broad opinion that encompasses the entirety of what "Anonymous" is. It's not a single group. It has no leader, no single cause. Are some Anons anti-Semitic? Undoubtedly. Are all of them? Fuck no. Just like some Anons are anti-ISIS, others are pro-lulz, some might still be anti-Scientology. "Anonymous" is nothing more than an open-source brand name. Literally anyone can do anything and claim to be doing it in the name of the legion. Whether or not they actually have the support of a sizable group of people, or the skills of the 1337 haxx0rz is debatable. Some do, some don't.

Some of the actions done in the name of Anonymous are laudable. The anti-Scientology protests and massive leak and spread of information pertaining to the group's extremely dubious practices. The times Anonymous manages to track down the culprits behind an atrocious animal abuse viral video clip and bring them to justice. Going after ISIS and the terrorist group's social media presence. Other actions are horrible and ought to be condemned. Doxxing and harassing people. Hacking websites for shits and giggles. Spreading hateful messages against gays, Jews, whatever happens to catch the fancy of a section of the group at any given time. No single instance can speak for the whole, as doing so assumes that Anonymous is one single group rather than dozens, maybe hundreds making use of the reputation and tropes of the brand name.

Attack their social media and whatnot, which seems like a bad idea honestly because it might just drive them deeper and deeper into the good ol Internet and make them harder to find.

isn't that the point? ISIS survives by feeding its ideology to the disaffected masses. Anonymous is attempting to isolate ISIS by cutting it off from there primary recruitment tool. Once the recruitment is cut off, the ISIS core will be identified and then they can be targeted by real force

It wouldn't do much to cut them off imo, they'll still be able to advertise and try to recruit people they'll just be doing it in different forms. Of course I'm not sure anyone in Daesh is smart enough to know how to use anything beyond Twitter and whatnot.

Pretty sure they've never exposed anyone really serious, just some dumbasses they tricked into downloading software that revealed some info about them.

If I recall correctly, they are for internet privacy, yet have broken the privacy of hundreds of thousands of people.

Eh, when you have drug and arms dealers who go around making sometimes hundreds of thousands a month on the markets that seems like a pretty small catch.

ITT: A lot of sweeping assertions about a broad group of people with varying attitudes.

Full disclosure: Was a protester during Operation Chanology. I'm therefore a (former) anonymous member. On the other hand, I am a former Sony Playstation employee during 2011, so I've been indirectly affected by anonymous too.

Honestly, anonymous is too diverse a group to pigeon hole into one demographic (and certainly far too complex to intelligently summarise in a single paragraph).

On one hand you have a group of vaguely minded individuals concerned with freedom of expression, pro-democracy, opposition to cult ideologies, opposition to government monitoring and other generally admirable aims.

On the other hand you have a group which includes people more concerned with shits n giggles, and occasional internal clashes over objectives.

Isn't it curious how people will claim they are against tribalism, then pigeonhole themselves into tribes?

I think there's a difference between being anti-Israel and anti-semetic. I'm personally anti-Israel, that's got to do with politics more than religion. I'm alright with Jews, just not the country Israel, which I think is where Anonymous comes in.
