Well, I believe that the existence of a small population of something like bigfoot could be possible, especially in the remote areas of the Pacific Northwest. However, it's only plausible. There may or may not be. However, bigfoot does exist in native american folklore and did long before white settlers, so there might be something to it.

Now, if we are talking about Borneo, Africa, or remote parts of South America where bigfoot type creatures are also reported, then I say it's much more likely. Both gorillas and pandas were thought to be myths before their "discovery" be westerners, so it's entirely possible another great ape could be hiding in a remote jungle somewhere.

And in any case, it's entirely likely that giants, trolls, and elves represent some kind of beings that were encountered at some point. It's also entirely possible that these beings represent the ancestral memories of the remnants of Neanderthals or other hominid groups.

You have to look at most folklore the way you do religions. People uninformed of the world around them experienced something they couldn't explain with their current knowledge, so they made something up to fit the narrative. Like the chupacabra, livestock turn up dead over the course of a month or so, must be a fearsome monster out there preying on them.

Not to say that folklore isn't interesting, from an anthropology standpoint especially. But just because natives believe in the existence of a undocumented north American great ape is not sufficient to prove it's existence. Bear in mind many cultures also think you can see the future by throwing a bag of bones on the ground.
