Slavery is the most widely cited proof of American Evil, the only problem with that is in every civilization in world history, including African societies, practiced slavery often on a much larger scale then America did. There are two other questions about slavery that must be asked in order to make a moral judgment about America.
The first is which societies were the first to abolish slavery?
-Since all societies had slavery that's a far more important question to ask the who had slaves. All the societies that first abolished slavery were rooted in the Jewish and Christian Bibles, and among them were the United States
The second question that needs to be answered is this, was America morally better then other societies in just about every other regard?
-Yes. America became the least racist, least xenophobic country in the world.
I think that the public is only shown the negatives of statics. Take Racial profiling, an abuse of blacks by police, in the summer of 2014 Ferguson Missouri became "ground zero" for this accusation when a white officer shot and killed an unarmed black teenager. While the Department of Justice investigation cleared the officer of any wrong doing it did accuse the cities police department of racial bias.
But what were the Justice departments most headlined stat? The gap in the percentage of the blacks living in Ferguson (67%) and the percentage of those stopped by police for traffic violations who were black. (85%) (85-67=18) Racism right? Not so fast. Blacks make up (25%) of New York City but account for (55%) of traffic violations, a thirty point difference. Why isn't the NYPD a majority of which is minority considered more intuitionally racist then the Ferguson PD?
You can't have an honest discussion of police conduct without an honest discussion of black crime.
Blacks make up 13% of the population while they commit 50 percent of the nations homicides and in almost every case it is blacks killing blacks, just like most white homicides are whites killing whites.
In 2012 the CDC said the police killed 123 blacks while killing twice as many whites. But that same year blacks killed 6000 people, again mostly other blacks.
Traffic stops, since traffic stops allow the officer to exercise more discretion racist cops can have a field day right? Wrong. The National Institute of Justice is the research agency of the Department of Justice. In 2013 NIJ published a study called "Race, Trust, and Police Legitimacy" Three out of four black drivers admitted to being stopped for a legitimate reason. Blacks compared to whites, on average are more likely to speed and commit other traffic offenses. The Institute wrote "seatbelt usage is chronically lower among black drivers, If a law enforcement agency aggressively enforces seatbelt violations, police will stop more black drivers. The NIJ conclusion, these were differences in offending. Not racism. The National Highway Traffic Administration reported the blacks violate traffic laws at higher rate then whites, in every offence.
