I'm basing it on how little coverage was given on Thomas Eric Duncan compared to everyone else who caught ebola and didn't die. Duncan wasn't even offered the experimental anti-ebola drugs that everyone else who caught were far as I remember.

Nina Pham received a significant deal of attention, and she wasn't white. Also, I'm not sure what you mean when you say that you're comparing Duncan to everybody else who caught ebola and "didn't die", considering that he did succumb to the virus.

Duncan was the only fatality in the West, exactly. As long as it's just Africans people generally won't give a fuck past "Am I at risk too?"

Ok, I understand you now. You were saying that Duncan didn't receive as much attention from the media as the survivors. I agree with you on that point. But again, the people who received more coverage represented many races, so I'm uncertain as to how this datum fits with your interpretation. Possibly, the media provides more attention to survivors rather than victims because a person who gets ebola and survives can generate more potential stories than somebody who gets ebola and simply dies. This would explain the discrepancy without needing to invoke racial or national biases.

In regards to your second point, I can definitely see the perspective you're coming from. A lot of Westerns really do have that insulated, self-interested attitude. But perhaps this isn't a bias against Africa as much as it is a bias in favor of pragmatism. Many people, especially in America, tend to be incredibly pragmatic, and therefore have a general "How does this shit effect me?" attitude rather than a specific bias against African events.

Unfortunately.

It is a big deal to many, however. In fact, if anyone is interested, you can volunteer computing resources to help find a cure:

Oh, for fuck's sake, why does everything you post have to lack substance and be so unfunnily snarky. Like, the world erupted in a mix of fear and sympathy when Ebola swept through Liberia and Sierra Leone. It's not as if people don't care, quite the opposite, we care too much about this whole ebola thing. Let WHO deal with it.

Hey, I admit it I'm no doctor. But let's put it this way, if the choice is between making sure no one from the affected area can expose himself to the us population and making sure people from the affected area can expose himself to the us population, which would you rather have?

The sensible option. Which is the reason-based approach that was used previously, which resulted in no transmissions in the US, UK or other countries outside the infection zones.

Did you see any of the US media coverage when this outbreak first happened? The amount of fear mongering going on in some reports and news highlights was ridiculous, it was making it out like Ebola was literally in US cities killing people.

Well, hospitals in the US are more abundant and have access to better methods of subduing the disease long enough for it to be treated. Also, as someone said upthread, you have to be exposed to an infected individual's bodily fluids to become infected yourself, and better infrastructure goes a long way towards preventing that.

Just avoid touching bodily fluids of infected people, wash your hands regularly and don't consume shady unidentified meat bought from shady unidentified sources and you're incredibly unlikely to catch it. Hygiene and some measure of common sense and common knowledge regarding disease transmission goes a long way.

As far as diseases go, ebola is ridiculously ineffective when it comes to spreading. Afflicted people are incredibly noticeable, its means of spreading are rather limited too. Like, for most people on here, the everyday flu is a more dangerous killer than ebola.
