Actually I don't get any information about Albania from western sources. The west simply doesn't bother talking about Albania all that much. I doubt you could find many westerners who even know where Albania is.

Where I get my information on Albania is from Albanians now living in Canada, who like many other Albanians fled the awful economic conditions of their homeland and posed as Greeks in various countries throughout the EU, eventually making their way here. And all of them agree that Albania under Hoxha was absolutely dreadful. In fact, if you dare broach the subject, you yourself will be subject to hours of increasingly drunken lectures. They will go on and on about trying to get permits to buy refrigerators, about the constant fear of being put into work camps, or of having actually BEEN in such, etc etc. It's depressing beyond belief. I've yet to meet an Albanian who didn't so virulently hate communism that it borders on the obsessive, and to be honest, given the circumstances they've lived through, I can't really blame them, even though it makes them seem a little silly sometimes when they get all suspicious about 'socialist' programs here.

Ugh, that's another awful thing. I have a good friend who is a Serbian, lovely person, and another friend who married and Albanian. The Serb and the Albanian simply CANNOT get along. It's painful to watch. She's better at it than he is, for whatever reason, but he just can't get over it.
