I'm on an Australian Commonwealth Supported Place loan scheme (which is the norm in Australia).
It's an inflation-indexed no-interest loan paid out of the tax system once our income outpaces a particular income level.

That's how the loans work here I think, but since they're only the new normal I've never had to avail of one so I'm not entirely versed on their workings.
The state grant is still available mind, they're just harder to get (as in you now have to much closer to the breadline rather than just working class). How they work is that it covers the course fees and gives you three payouts per academic year. Was three installments of €1,500 when I was in uni but I believe it's around €900 now.

University fees were actually abolished in Australia, for 15 years (starting in the 70s).
But then the government decided they couldn't really afford it. Shame. Wouldn't mind, say, mortgaging Sydney to set up a perpetuity for uni fee abolition again.
