Actually yes it can.

Why do we have the federal government and UN Charter?

The Hague?

oh right, because states can break laws! like Treason!

Yeah, because the UN has so much power. The power of cease and desist, lest we send a sterner letter!

The rest of the US is not as eager to get rid of California as you'd like to believe.

According to super accurate true Korea polls, over 900% of Californians want to escape the tyrannous American overlords and join dear leaders glorious republic!

There was a petition with 20 signatures...so not many.

I an assure you, as an America, if their was any chance of a Californian secession I'd be the first to sign up and quell the rebellion.

There is no chance of California leaving this union.

Hmm...If California becomes independent, it will most likely start a chain reaction in other US states, basically there`s a possibility USA would split into independent states in the end. So that would be the end of the only remaining world`s superpower. Good or Bad? Probably the consequences wouldn`t be that good.

California has some of the most logical people in the nation.

We also have Hollywood, but I'd like to think that is its own separate planet.
While she had no regrets about throwing the lever to douse her husband's mistress in molten gold, Blanche did feel a pang of conscience for the innocent bystanders whose proximity had caused them to suffer gilt by association.

1: I move out of California
2: California becomes Independent
3: It takes with it, a massive population
-Concentrated mainly in highly liberal areas, Mind you
4: It also takes 55 Electoral College votes, which always go Democrat.
5: Republicans for the next 50 years
Which means...
6: Problem Solved
Even when I contradict myself, I am right.

I mean if you want to ignore the fact that it was part of Mexico for a long time and was only an independent nation for like, a year, then sure.

Three weeks, actually.

That is indeed the US government's largest fear if a state secedes. If one leaves to become independent, we can see the US disintegrate in a vaguely similar manner like the USSR.

Well, maybe we should defederalize. It wouldn't tear the union apart, but it would lower the overall angriness of the states, which would then be able to Self-Determine what should be law, other than some other large state (Yeah, California. I mean you) telling them what to do. "The Great Compromise" was not so great for freedom and diversity.

its actually New Jersey--Cali---Texas in that order for least favorite states in the union. Regardless the entire notion that cali would actually leave the union is dumb, its not going to happen nor would the gov allow it to even if that was in fact what they wanted. So again, the whole thread is truly pointless.

Independent for three whole weeks.

Three weeks and four days, I believe (14th June through 9th of July 1846).

It's also worth stressing that the individuals claiming to represent the 'California Republic' never had effective control of any territory beyond Sonoma's pueblo (their HQ still stands) and Sutter's Fort in what's now Sacramento, and never even attempted to set up anything resembling a civil administration for California. They had absolutely no international recognition, whether formal or informal. The 'California Republic' instead largely consisted of roughly 30-40 Anglo settlers based in what's now California's wine country who happily subsumed themselves into the United States once the Mexican-American war was proclaimed and US forces turned up in Sonoma.

It was never an effective sovereign state, de jure or de facto.

Maybe we just give San Francisco independence for a few years as a trial run for the rest of the state.

San Francisco already thinks its independent. the good city council of san francisco wastes its taxpayer dollars regularly on condemning isreal in gaza and a whole host of other international issues that the city of san fran thinks the world cares about their opinion etc.

1) source
2) How can condemning anyone spend any significant amount of money? Pen and paper are pretty cheap these days.
