Yeah, because the UN has so much power. The power of cease and desist, lest we send a sterner letter!

I mean if you want to ignore the fact that it was part of Mexico for a long time and was only an independent nation for like, a year, then sure.

So that would be the end of the only remaining world`s superpower. Good or Bad? Probably the consequences wouldn`t be that good.

The rest of the US is not as eager to get rid of California as you'd like to believe.

Three weeks and four days, I believe (14th June through 9th of July 1846).
It's also worth stressing that the individuals claiming to represent the 'California Republic' never had effective control of any territory beyond Sonoma's pueblo (their HQ still stands) and Sutter's Fort in what's now Sacramento, and never even attempted to set up anything resembling a civil administration for California. They had absolutely no international recognition, whether formal or informal. The 'California Republic' instead largely consisted of roughly 30-40 Anglo settlers based in what's now California's wine country who happily subsumed themselves into the United States once the Mexican-American war was proclaimed and US forces turned up in Sonoma.
It was never an effective sovereign state, de jure or de facto.

Maybe we just give San Francisco independence for a few years as a trial run for the rest of the state.

San Francisco already thinks its independent. the good city council of san francisco wastes its taxpayer dollars regularly on condemning isreal in gaza and a whole host of other international issues that the city of san fran thinks the world cares about their opinion etc.
