Sounds like the annotations have a definite critical/anti-fascist slant that could actually be very relevant and informative in the current fucked-up political climate. Anyways they straight-up sell Mein Kampf in the history section of the Barnes & Noble where I live (Seattle) and the far-right here is miniscule.

It's not a matter of "penance", because that's taking it as a foregone conclusion that fascism could never happen again. That's a really dangerous assumption to make. Nazis unfortunately still exist, they just go by euphemisms in Germany.

I actually recommend reading it.

Not that it's a good read, mind you, but familiarizing yourself with Hitler's views is advantageous when others try to tell you "what Hitler thought."

Considering this government is trying to force through surveillance bills that every expert is saying will not work and considers "buys a mobile phone without telling parents" or "questioned government policy" as signs of possible radicalisation, I would not be surprised.

I've tried to read Mein Kampf once (an original, 1939 edition) and I found it to be long, winding, ranting and ultimately boring and not to the point. Even at times when he does get to the point i.e. the expansion of Lebensraum in the East, expelling of the Jews etc., I couldn't help but see it as utterly misguided. Even during Hitler's era, people found it boring. It was widespread and in many cases even mandatory, but that doesn't mean that it was well read. As for its redistribution: I don't mind. Better to redistribute it than adhere to some kind of well intended, yet flawed form of censorship. Those who intend to learn from history inclusing its mistakes, won't become Nazis merely because of his book and those who have such tendencies probably would have developed them anyway even without it. By comparison, one can read the Unabomber's manifesto or 2083, a declaration of European independence. (Breivik's manifesto) without any form of censorship or annotation at all. Personally, I think the latter's manifesto is not only more relevant and also more dangerous than Hitler's obsolete rant and his misguided, distorted views. 2083 is also distorted, but it addresses the modern problem of Muslim immigrants and their offspring and as such, its very nature is infinitely more divisive in our modern world than Hitler's prose.

Almost like the book isn't magic and people won't turn Nazi just from being in the same store with a copy of it...

I welcome the (re-)publishing of this book. I've never read it save for excerpts back in university, but people need to read for themselves and see what is written, in all its apparently crappily-written horror.

Exactly.

If you want to have a well-rounded and educated view on politics, you can't just stay within your own ideological box. Books like the Doctrine of Fascism, Mein Kampf, the Communist Manifesto, Man Economy and State, and What is Property (as a start), should all be required reading for anyone who wants to claim good and full knowledge of political theory.

There is no good excuse for banning books. I find censorship of literature to be horrific.

Unless you live in Germany (and perhaps Austria?) you could have read it even before now, and is found readily online. Even in the places where it had been banned I don't think there were any laws against reading it.

Oh, yeah. PDFs are only a Google search away and I know it's in most every Barnes and Noble here in America.

Heck, even the Communist Manifesto was better than Mein Kampf. At least it was moderately orginized. The only decent part of Mein Kampf was the section on propaganda, and I heard that he had plagiarized that from a book he had. If anything will prevent you from supporting antiseminisim it is the terrible quality of that horrible book.

Yes because encouraging the bans over things in which people have died to defend is such a grand fucking idea right?

Pervert.

Given the rates of certain practices that humans commit when it comes to sex. Pornography is the least if sometimes most odd of everyone's worries.

To be fair I don't recall any sex slavery when it comes to Hezbollah. They do admit to prostitution, but again that isn't necessarily sex slavery unlike Daesh which pretty says "yes we breed women till they die".
