WMD's have been at the forefront of the KPA's modernization efforts.

Which is hilarious, because putting together a functional air force would be hella cheaper. Or arming their troops with Russian or Chinese arms and gear made after 1950. I think their special forces use AEKs or something but that's about as “advanced” as it gets with the KPA.

Nuclear weapons are much more useful in keeping out your enemies though. A couple planes are not particularly scary and the USA would happily go world police on you, but if you have a nuke on the otherhand no one will ever dare to mess with you. MAD and all of it's wonderfulness.

The front line units of the KPA (thinking units like the 105th Guards here) are actually quite modern. Infantry are equipped with Korean made weapons that are domestic copies of things like the AK-74, a domestic copy of the PKP, modern equipment (helmets, body armor etc) that appear to be domestic copies of Russian and Chinese equipment, NK made tanks have reactive armor and computerized FCS' etc. They even do have a domestic aircraft industry, though I don't know to what extent (a book is coming out on the subject in March). They do have quite a lot to show for their modernization.

I'm not seeing anything about the PKP. There's a domestically-produced PKM, but nothing about a PKP. Also, from what I can scrounge up on the internet, only the most forward forces use the Type 98. Type 68s (domestically-produced AKMs) are still by and large the standard. Interestingly, special forces don't use AEKs, they use knocked off M16A1s and SAR-80s. I guess those capitalist pig dogs know a thing or two after all. :)

The NK government has officially confirmed the quakes were from Starkiller Base, which they have built. This is 100% true.

He can detonate a hydrogen bomb. That's nice. Now if only he had one that was small enough to fit on a missile.
Crimes committed by Muslims will be a pan-Islamic plot and proof of Islam's inherent evil. On the other hand crimes committed by non-Muslims will merely be the acts of loners who do not represent their belief system at all.
The probability of one's participation in homosexual acts is directly proportional to one's public disdain and disgust for homosexuals.
If a political figure makes an accusation of wrongdoing without evidence, odds are probable that the accuser or an associate thereof has in fact committed the very same act, possibly to a worse degree.

No...really doesn't seem like that at all.

Being a highly militant dictatorship and having proliferated nuclear arms does not mean you'll immediately try to start using them in any manner. If anything, the acquisition of nuclear arms is meant to be a really good bargaining chip, or a deterrence to war. It's simple brinkmanship, in the end.

I mean, Kim Jong Un doesn't strike me as an incredibly intelligent fellow...but he's definitely smart enough to know that nuking Seoul is a terrible fucking idea.

Yeah I'm pretty sure the PK derivative I was thinking of is based off the PKM, though IIRC it uses some elements from the PKP and some Nork designed upgrades as well. Only one or two examples have been seen of the Type-82 actually (here's a damaged one recovered by Japan). There's a lot of conflicting accounts right now on how well dispersed the Type-98 is, it's one reason I'm waiting so much on that book I mentioned :p

It would certainly be interesting if this was indeed a hydrogen device though, that would greatly change the situation in Korea.

If they wanted to do that they already would have. North Korea wants the weapons for MAD so nobody (mainly the US) can go World Police on them.

The hydrogen bomb he set off was likely a bulky Manhattan Project junkpile. Nothing that can be sent to a target outside of Best Korea, if even.

Everyone talking like North Korea setting off an H-Bomb means they've developed MIRV and cruise missile technology to go with it.

No, an H-bomb is a thermonuclear weapon, which is more damaging and powerful than what is commonely called a nuke such as the bombs dropped on Japan.

They already have the missiles, they just lack a capable re-entry device so the warhead would burn up if they fired it somewhere as far as the US.
