There's probably nothing premature about it, it's pretty much NK's MO. They've carried out 3 underground tests in the area, with this probably being the 4th.

Which is hilarious, because putting together a functional air force would be hella cheaper. Or arming their troops with Russian or Chinese arms and gear made after 1950. I think their special forces use AEKs or something but that's about as “advanced” as it gets with the KPA.

Nuclear weapons are much more useful in keeping out your enemies though. A couple planes are not particularly scary and the USA would happily go world police on you, but if you have a nuke on the otherhand no one will ever dare to mess with you. MAD and all of it's wonderfulness.

The front line units of the KPA (thinking units like the 105th Guards here) are actually quite modern. Infantry are equipped with Korean made weapons that are domestic copies of things like the AK-74, a domestic copy of the PKP, modern equipment (helmets, body armor etc) that appear to be domestic copies of Russian and Chinese equipment, NK made tanks have reactive armor and computerized FCS' etc. They even do have a domestic aircraft industry, though I don't know to what extent (a book is coming out on the subject in March). They do have quite a lot to show for their modernization.

I'm not seeing anything about the PKP. There's a domestically-produced PKM, but nothing about a PKP. Also, from what I can scrounge up on the internet, only the most forward forces use the Type 98. Type 68s (domestically-produced AKMs) are still by and large the standard. Interestingly, special forces don't use AEKs, they use knocked off M16A1s and SAR-80s. I guess those capitalist pig dogs know a thing or two after all.

Being a highly militant dictatorship and having proliferated nuclear arms does not mean you'll immediately try to start using them in any manner. If anything, the acquisition of nuclear arms is meant to be a really good bargaining chip, or a deterrence to war. It's simple brinkmanship, in the end.

I mean, Kim Jong Un doesn't strike me as an incredibly intelligent fellow...but he's definitely smart enough to know that nuking Seoul is a terrible fucking idea.

Yeah I'm pretty sure the PK derivative I was thinking of is based off the PKM, though IIRC it uses some elements from the PKP and some Nork designed upgrades as well. Only one or two examples have been seen of the Type-82 actually (here's a damaged one recovered by Japan). There's a lot of conflicting accounts right now on how well dispersed the Type-98 is, it's one reason I'm waiting so much on that book I mentioned
