What are swirlies?

I've only ever seen them happen in popular 80s and 90s American comedic high school television shows, but when you put somebody's head in the toilet and flush said toilet.

Never seen it happen in reality.

It's the language of the peasantry! o/

No, really, there are many nuances in your language that can confuse a lot until you get the context in which they're said. For instances, idioms. Jeebus Craig, I had quite the time getting expressions like ''they're pulling the wool over your eyes'' right. :lol2: I just saw, literally, someone wrapping wool around someone's head to cover their eyes. Literally Lizzy here. xp

That will do.

Regardless, in general you are correct, that a language is best learned outside the classroom. The classroom is just to get some basics going, and help with issues, learning a language is best with other people, not from a book :)

But you don't necessarily have to be in a native speaker's country for that. English, especially, works well as a lingua franca in many parts of the world, eg. Scandinavia.

I guess I should've added that due to the root differences, when it comes to Spain, yes, English is better often better understood in an English speaking country. At least in my experience. And that's not to say that a Spanish speaking person can't understand the language just from the classroom, but certain nuances of it are better grasped when you go to an English speaking country. :)

And don't forget that the average Dutch citizen gets exposed to heavy doses of British and American movies and television series, all subtitled. We tend to hear a lot of English in comparison to the people in countries where everything is dubbed in order to keep those scary foreign languages away from the innocent, pure children.

At this point, we've pretty much proven that not only can evolution happen, it pretty much must happen since it's basically impossible to prevent it from happening.

On similar vein, there was earlier today on Finnish part of Tumblr discussion on "Can you imagine how cringey hollywood movies would be, if they would be dubbed in Finnish". Earlier I posted here a one example someone forgeried to make a point.
I wonder if this sentiment is more universal. :P
