The point to press with them, is that it's not. Plants have sentience, why do you distinguish between them and animals, we all have cell and circulatory systems.

Well, considering Afghanistan wasn't too bad off before the US intervention. But, countries do shady shit all the time.

I feel like the jihadists would have taken up Afghanistan regardless of if the US intervened or not. The USSR collapsed by 1991 which would have taken the communism out of Afghanistan.

Well, considering the USSR wasn't actually invading Afghanistan. The Mujahideen were islamist rebels, the Afghan government, being Communist at the time, requested USSR assistance in dealing with the Muj. Bin Ladin, who hailed from Saudi Arabia offered the US a deal, the US would covertly train and arm Al Qaeda and the Muj to fight off Russian helicopters, giving them their "own Vietnam". (With the added hope of establishing a US friendly regime to secure oil and a presence in the region)

Russia was defeated, pulled out, with the fall of Afghanistan being a huge blow to the Soviets. The Communist Afghan government collapsed, Taliban took control, and then Al Qaeda and the Taliban wanted to push the West out of their affairs completely. And thus, we have the Middle East conflagration in the making. The region has always been a checker board of allegiances, either to Russia or other US rivals, or to the US. Iraq was a brilliant buffer state between Saudi Arabia and Iran, who have been locked in a Cold War of their own, which is why Saddam was allowed to remain. There wasn't an issue until he invaded Kuwait, and put US Oil imports in jeopardy with fear of an invasion into Saudi oil fields as well. Any notion of a "greater good" is meh.
