Latest direct ancestry I know of is 1586, Thomas Hooker. I'm famous! Besides that, also significant Irish and some German.

He isn't the only one, I can track my ancestry back to the late 1300's in Scotland.

Indeed. On my paternal side, I can trade my ancestry to the 1500s in both Germany and Scotland.

My maternal side is more complicated, it was just a bunch of Swedish farmers and somehow some Swedish nobility.

America has been settled for many generations, it's been over 200 years since it's independence was declared, and America has it's own distinct culture(s) that children born there are raised into and immigrants are expected to assimilate into. At this point, people can most definitely say that they have "American" ancestors.

American culture and identity is an "identity of identities" as it was intended to be. I don't see why that would be a hot button issue with you. Immigration to the US didn't cease in 1776, and has been a major contributor to the nation and its unique cultural identity.

Why would you think it's a hot button issue? Because I contradicted you?

"American" is not an "identity of identities". America has an identity of it's own, and those born in the USA to families that have been American for generation were raised into it - they do not possess a foreign identity nor do their ancestors who were themselves born into American culture.

Immigration into Britain didn't cease after the Norman conquest. Foreign influence has been a major contributor to Britain and it's cultural identity since then. If people may not have "American" ancestors, then they cannot have "British" or even "English" ancestors either.

I'm half Vietnamese, with my family coming from the north.

The other half of me is northern European, with a quarter Irish blood, one eighth Norwegian, and one eighth Flemish.

Identifying as plain old American is just too boring because no ancient or medieval history (my opinion)

How interesting the history is is not relevant.

It is pathos-wise.

It is relevant emotionally. Again this is just my opinion though.

Emotions are irrelevant to who your ancestors were.

I know, but I'm talking about how you identify them. I think of my American ancestors as Irish Americans, English Americans, French Americans, etc.

So am I.

If your American ancestors have been born and raised in America for generations, I am very sceptical that even a trace of Irish/English/French culture remains. To identify them as Europeans is preposterous.

My grandmother was completely fluent in French

Was that because her parents passed it on to her, or did she study to acquire the language?
