He isn't the only one, I can track my ancestry back to the late 1300's in Scotland.

Should the English start specifying whether their earliest ancestors on the isles were Celts, Romans, Angles, Saxons, Norsemen, Normans, ... ?
America has been settled for many generations, it's been over 200 years since it's independence was declared, and America has it's own distinct culture(s) that children born there are raised into and immigrants are expected to assimilate into. At this point, people can most definitely say that they have "American" ancestors.

American culture and identity is an "identity of identities" as it was intended to be. I don't see why that would be a hot button issue with you. Immigration to the US didn't cease in 1776, and has been a major contributor to the nation and its unique cultural identity.

"American" is not an "identity of identities". America has an identity of it's own, and those born in the USA to families that have been American for generation were raised into it - they do not possess a foreign identity nor do their ancestors who were themselves born into American culture.

Immigration into Britain didn't cease after the Norman conquest. Foreign influence has been a major contributor to Britain and it's cultural identity since then. If people may not have "American" ancestors, then they cannot have "British" or even "English" ancestors either.
