Yeah. My English ancestors that came to Virginia after the Civil War? Some of the largest slave-holding families in the commonwealth. *sighs*

Which actually reminds me: One was the colonel in the militia (having been a colonel in the Cavalier Army before, you know, losing), and helped put down Bacon's Rebellion, which you might have heard of. Nathaniel Bacon even named him in his oath, noting his group's grievances against the government. :P

My family may be originally from eastern Switzerland, but that's far from certain. I'm pretty sure the farthest my family history can be reliably traced back is 1700's Amsterdam.

The only (sort of) military history my family has that I am aware of are two men who were employed by the United East Indies Company to guard a fortress in the Cape. Apparently they got sick of it, and deserted by taking the next ship to the Indies. They were later pardoned by the "Heeren XVI" ("Lords Seventeen", the central rulership of the Company).

I assume being born in the US, which is more in-line with nationality, since the US is a melting pot of immigrants.

Should the English start specifying whether their earliest ancestors on the isles were Celts, Romans, Angles, Saxons, Norsemen, Normans, ... ?

America has been settled for many generations, it's been over 200 years since it's independence was declared, and America has it's own distinct culture(s) that children born there are raised into and immigrants are expected to assimilate into. At this point, people can most definitely say that they have "American" ancestors.

I've probably got some really unethical ancestors. I mean, if the Swedish monarchy committed atrocities, then it's certain.

Yes, I'm mostly English. First ancestor that comes to mind came from... Gloucestershire, in 1632. Though I did have a couple more who arrived in 1607 - we know less about them.

Which, come to think of it, means I probably have cannibals in my ancestry, considering they survived.

The highest legal nobles in my ancestry we've found were actually a couple of dukes that were involved in forcing King John to sign the Magna Charta, which I think is pretty cool. Also the youngest prime minister in British history.

No one we blatantly know committed atrocities, other than the major slaveholders.

I tend to think of people as their ancient or medieval ancestry, because it's more interesting in my opinion.

Probably research. My uncle did a lot of of research on our ancestry, and now I have a whole binder of ancestors on my dad's side going back to the 1500's.

This may surprise you, but my family's full of blue bloods. I literally have one hundred and ten page booklet two feet away from me detailing just one direct branch of my ancestry, through the former Cavalier colonel that arrived in 1632, and a few generations behind him, to about 1480. Even has a will from the early 1500's, which is written in what is only barely identifiable as English.

Yep. My family is highly interested/concerned with their bloodline, so to speak. My grandparents have hundreds and hundreds of pages detailing everything that can possibly be found out at this point.
