Anyways, I think she was the second best candidate, but I think Baghdadi was much more noteworthy. A shame Time decided to not do anyone not liked in the West to boost sales.

Surprised they didn't just go with Jenner to look good.

First of all, it's kind of surprising that Trump or Baghdadi didn't win, this does make you wonder whether the trolls actually voted for her? Maybe. It wouldn't be too surprising to see snarky internet users vote for her in reference to the recent, less enthusiastic, mood on her administration. But the fact that Time hasn't simply ignored her as they do with troll options, probably means they don't consider her a troll option, and I agree. Merkel has been a phenomenal chancellor.

What do you think? Does she deserve this accolade?

Not heard much from her recently so I'm not sure why. Better than Trump getting it...or God forbid Jenner...

They probably knew they'd create a lot of controversy on it. Surprised they didn't see that coming with Merkel, though.

Haven't you noticed the overflowing refugee camps and widespread food and water shortages of Berlin?

Sure. Lebanon and Turkey share similar cultural facets, so naturally, they can take more. It's not all about population.

Plus, a solid number of "refugees" aren't even refugees. They're either seeking material wealth or maybe even welfare. Granted, some are legitimate refugees. Furthermore, many Algerians, Morrocans, and other groups of people are abusing the migrant crisis to enter as supposed refugees.

And it simply isn't moral to refuse migrants fleeing a warzone on the basis that they won't integrate.

Ignoring the fact that many of the supposed refugees aren't really refugees at all, it stems further than that. Germany has taken the majority of refugees, whereas other non European nations have just turned a blind eye. Why must Germany be responsible? Why can't culturally and religiously similar nations take more?

The list goes on and on.

Germany was the most stable country in Europe at the time. Sending them elsewhere would have helped some populists gain power, meanwhile AFD in Germany has been losing traction in recent polls.

What do you mean the refugees aren't refugees?

Which is why I mostly disregard TIME POTY. If some brutal fascist dictator took over some country and started a Blitzkrieg, they wouldn't name them person of the year, since they'd be too controversial. Hell, they named Albert fucking Einstein "Person of the Century" back in 1999. I'd say Hitler most definitely deserved that "honor".

Not really, anymore. After the Ayatollah was chosen back in IIRC '78, they decided to not do anyone the west may dislike to boost sales.

Well, Abu Bakr-al-Baghdadi got 2nd place, so who knows.

Then again, they might have snuck in a few extra votes for Merkel to not put a terrorist on the front of Time Magazine. :p

People need to fucking assimilate into the culture of the country they're moving to. It would apply to Westerners as well. So don't start this dictatorial government bullshit.

Putin had backers in the West. I mean controversial as in the "mass genocide/anti-Western culture" sort. I mean, they didn't even have Hitler in their top three for "Person of the Century". That says a lot.
