Merkel is Time's person of the year

Postby Unnamed island state » Wed Dec 09, 2015 3:28 pm

BBC
Time
"The magazine cited her role in Europe's crises over migration and Greek debt.

Mrs Merkel had provided "steadfast moral leadership in a world where it is in short supply", editor Nancy Gibbs wrote.

Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was named runner-up and third place went to US presidential hopeful Donald Trump."

First of all, it's kind of surprising that Trump or Baghdadi didn't win, this does make you wonder whether the trolls actually voted for her? Maybe. It wouldn't be too surprising to see snarky internet users vote for her in reference to the recent, less enthusiastic, mood on her administration. But the fact that Time hasn't simply ignored her as they do with troll options, probably means they don't consider her a troll option, and I agree. Merkel has been a phenomenal chancellor.

What do you think? Does she deserve this accolade?

I like how between Merkel and Trump you think the trolls would vote for Merkel.

This is annoying.

I once respected her as an individual and as a leader. But, given her less than stellar handling of the migrant crisis, I've lost most of my respect for her. Her willingness to accept 800,000 migrants wasn't humane, it was disisive and in complete disregard for the German culture. She fails to understand that there's already a severe lack of integration within the German Muslim community, as well as social problems that are higher within the community.

As such, I'm quite mad that she went against the wills of the German people by opening the gates so to speak.

No it isn't.

And this seems deserved. From the whole Greek financial crisis, to the situation with the refugees, Merkel's been at the forefront of Europe the entire year.

Sure, she's been taking an active stance in European politics. Sure as hell doesn't mean her role was beneficial to the people of Europe.

Politicians have been known to retract or subtly disregard former statements. Her willingness to accept more than Germany can handle shows me that she is no longer principled in her opposition to multiculturalism. She saw a chaff to be hailed as a humanitarian, and she took it.

I don't give a rats ass about what she said, I care about what she does.

Right, cool.

That's right, you don't. Know who won the award in 1938 was? One Adolf Hitler. He was followed by Joseph Stalin the next year. Time isn't making any sort of claim on how good/bad they believe the policy of the person to be. They're saying who they think was most influential. A person that "for better or for worse...has done the most to influence the events of the year."

Person of the year is about being at forefront of international affairs and for most part being the main person in the spotlight, hence why Hitler was person of the year despite being a complete ass. You do not have to necessarily be a good person or even competent, just visible.

As Liberty already said, it's in complete disregard to German culture and Germany already has a problem with lack of integration from their Muslim community; last thing they need is more issues like that.

I am not totally against refugees though, there are obviously genuine cases too but they shouldn't have accepted so many. And they should have made background checks a bit tougher too.

Become Sweden? Fucking hope not.
