Obama is a Muslim, let me make this clear, which is why he is annoyed at this. He even said in an interview "MY ISLAMIC FAITH". As well as that, the 1952 Immigration and Nationality Act (Public Law 414) prohibits entry to an alien (exact terminology used) if their organization or beliefs support overthrowing the government of the USA by force, violence or other unconstitutional means. That by very law effectively outlaws Islam, as the Koran/Qur'an, Hadith and Sharia Law require complete submission to Islam, which is antithetical to the US government and the constitution. The Iranian students were told to report to Immigration offices so their visa status could be determined. It is a civil offense to remain in the country after your visa has expired.

The situations aren't at all comparable.

The state of Iran had just taken the US embassy in Tehran hostage. In response, as diplomatic pressure, all Iranian students were expelled and entrants denied. Because they were pressuring the Iranian state, which they had just broken off relations with.

This is like saying "we're going to prohibit blacks from entering the country until they stop doing inner city crimes" or "we're going to kick out all Asians until China stops trying to overtake our economy".
Even those aren't really comparable because those are talking about broad ethnicities while Trump is talking about a fucking religion that a quarter of the world holds.
