I would like to take an opportunity to air a concern I have given the circumstances. This site has its share of trolls, and as we know trolls don't really have much of a reputation for shame and can be around a given site for years at a time. I think the system automatically issues a DEAT to inactive nations after a set amount of time rather than admins doing this manually, and that the system also automatically puts the name back into circulation after an even longer amount of time. Obviously Dyakovo is never going to log in again, which means if all of that is true his username will eventually enter circulation again. I know it's just a username, but I would rankle at the sight of someone trolling and abusing people using Dyakovo's username, particularly if they crossed the event horizon and mocked the fact that he's dead while doing it. Is there a way to prevent the system from recycling that username? I really don't want to make a mountain out of a molehill, and feel free to say "Celseon, you're thinking about this way too hard" or "We don't want to set a precedent of putting eternal dibs on usernames." But I really think a lot of people here, myself included, would hate to see that name abused and tarnished. There's only one Dyakovo, and he's gone.

I don't believe I knew who he was but this is incredibly sad nonetheless. May he rest in peace and be fondly remembered by those who knew him and were close to him.

Don't quote me on it, but while checking the graveyard for usernames there have been several nations that pretty much don't exist anymore of significant size in the billions that you can't take specifically because they were nations of significant size, even though you should be able to based on their expiration date.

You might want to throw a line at the moderation forums or technical where [violet] looks at things from the technical perspective. They might be able to help with this matter further.

There's a population limit on the nations that are allowed to be recycled, and Dya's nation is far, far beyond that limit.

And it's both ironic and fitting, considering the late event.

Why do you have the word popular in scare quotes?

Also, his wife posted it on FB, and some of them happen to be friends with her on there. Some of us also happened to be friends with him on FB.

He got to be "popular" through his biting sense of humor, a willingness to fearlessly confront idiocy where he saw it, a tendency to get his facts right and source his arguments (even when you didn't agree with the conclusions that he drew), and a joy that he seemed to take in driving the moderators around the bend due to his willingness to take a warning if it meant getting his point across as forcefully as he wished.

There's no good way to put this, but Dyakovo was involved in an accident some time ago and has passed away last week. I know many people here liked Dyakovo. He was straight to the point and frank. He didn't waste everyone's time with honeyed words and his jokes were brilliant. Sometimes they were a bit too much for the more sensitive folks here, and some made you feel like a horrible human being for laughing.

You might not have agreed with him all the time and maybe you didn't quite get along with him. I know I didn't always see eye-to-eye, but fuck it I had nothing but respect for him.

This thread serves as a tribute to Dyakovo, use it to share your thoughts and words.

Out of concerns for the privacy of those most deeply affected, we will not be sharing any details about how we know this (beyond what Dyakovo's closest friends and loved ones choose to publish). Please conduct yourselves in this thread as though you were actually attending a real-world wake at a funeral home.
