How important is your ethnicity to you?

Postby Dulce et Decorum » Fri Dec 04, 2015 5:13 am

What is your claimed ethnicity?

What aspects of that ethnicity do you engage in?

How important is your claimed ethnicity?

I'm English through and through and engage in many of the expected cultural aspects of English life (the food, the sports, the music, the arts) and I couldn't imagine ever wanting to turn my back on all that over 1000 years of history has crafted. It has moulded my understanding of a fair and just society, a willingness to help those not as fortunate as I to be English, and generally I feel most comfortable and at ease amongst my own culture.

My ethnicity is Polish, even though I live in Australia, born in Australia but I am not Australian, I am Polish, even though, I can't speak the language yet, I plan to learn, I already eat Polish food and celebrate Polish holidays.

Why do you identify more with your polish ethnicity?

I grew up in a Polish household learning Polish traditions rather than Australian ones. I find that Australians are blunt, rude and arrogant people with no regards for other people's feelings. They only care for the short term and care little for the community.

Well, my ethnicity is a mixed bag of French, English, German, Swiss and Irish. I have to say I love looking up information about some of my ancestry. But it really doesn't play a part although I find it fascinating. I just love learning about the cultures that I come from and I love the history, the myths and the Architecture!

I'm half British, half Italian. I am very sensitive to those two cultures for that reason.

Well, not very much, since I don't know much. All I know is that I'm pretty tall, have ginger hair and that I'm not descended from Ireland. Also, parts of my family came to the UK with the Hapsburg's as servants.

Potentially.
Ginger hair is a thing on both sides of my family, however.

I don't care about it, but the history of my ancestors and such is nice to know and all that. I'm proud of being a Westerner. Being a white westerner simply means my family have been here longer, it doesn't make newer arrivals less my brethren.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.

As for whether it's important… meh, not really.

I'm English and I hate going on holiday anywhere outside the country because hearing all the "outsider speak", seeing signs in a different language and the food being different makes me anxious and unsettled at the most basic existential level.

What is your claimed ethnicity?
mostly Malay but with some (alleged) Spanish blood.
What aspects of that ethnicity do you engage in?
I absolutely love Malay food and culture, but in this area of Nusantara, we had Christian influence, so Filipino Malays have different religion than those in other parts of Nusantara.
How important is your claimed ethnicity?
The Malay cuisine is very well known to the world for it's spiciness and mixture of flavour.

It is, because of the language.
Wich is (the language group) basical in most things, and politics among them since the way of reasoning depends on it.
Not considered yet when this language stores an enormus cultural heritage.
