Why do people want guns anyway?

I have them to put holes in paper targets, break clay targets, and ring steel targets. My brother in law collects and hunts with them. A friend of mine is disabled (wheelchair) and lives in a relatively bad area, so he has one for protection when he's around town. Another one of my friends is a target shooter that also has the desire to hunt some day.

While I disagree strongly with Camicon's previous post, I broadly agree with this one (sans the claim that there is a 'complete' lack of regulations which is certainly untrue). The 2nd amendment appears to be an enormous obstacle to any gun control, by making it essentially a priori 'wrong' or unlawful at a fundamental level to restrict gun rights. I'm not saying it's a good or bad thing, but if you're of the opinion that there is insufficient gun control in the US you can't simply ignore this elephant in the room.

You know what would have happened if France allowed concealed carry? More people would have been shot and killed. Cops would have killed civilians attempting to intervene, those same civilians would have killed each other, and nothing would have been accomplished because the terrorists were wearing explosive fucking vests.

Don't kid yourself, throwing a handful of concealed carry civvies in that concert hall wouldn't have stopped things or saved lives.

A responsible gun culture does exist in Switzerland, but it is entirely different than the one in the US. The Swiss view gun ownership as a civic duty and as a tool of homeland defense from invading armies. Americans use guns as a defense against other Americans. The mentality is completely different.

As was said by someone else, that is exactly how Americans view the Second Amendment. And while the Swiss have high rates of gun ownership, but regulate the shit out of ammunition. Not much you can do with a gun when you don't have any bullets.

per year, 6700 people die of gunshot wounds in the EU, with 503 million inhabitants.
Per year, around 33,000 people die of gunshot wounds, assuming it has remained constant since 2013. The US has 318 million inhabitants.
