The San Bernardino Fire Department tweeted that it was responding to a "20 victim shooting incident" and it was working to clear the scene.
It is still a "very active scene" and police are trying to secure the building, said a spokeswoman from the San Bernardino Police Department.
There may be up to three gunmen she said, and the shooters were heavily armed and possibly wearing body armour.
She did not confirm the number of victims.
A local reporter tweeted that people are being evacuated from the Inland Regional Center, a non-profit medical and health organisation.
People are being seen wheeled away on stretchers with medics and police officers in attendance.
Representatives from the FBI and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms are on the scene.
No arrests have been made yet.
An ABC affiliate tweeted that there are 12 fatalities, but police have not confirmed that number.
Another mass shooting in the US, breaking news so details are a bit sketchy. I'll update the OP as more becomes available.
3 shooters wearing body armour really seems to point at some kind of terrorism type event in my mind but this is all super early stuff.
What the hell is going on over there?

As I understand it, the number of crimes has been decreasing since the 1980s (something I've seen attributed to the influence of video games, actually!) but the number of people killed in individual crimes is up. So the US doesn't have so much of a gun homicide problem so much as it has a spree killing problem.

"Farook attended last year's holiday party too, an ex-colleague recalls
Griselda Reisinger, a former co-worker of Syed Farook, said Farook worked as a food inspector and flew under the radar at San Bernardino County's relatively small public health department.
“He was very quiet,” said Reisinger, who worked for 11 years as an environmental inspector. “I would say hi and bye, but we never engaged him in conversation. He didn’t say much at all.”
Reisinger said she remembered Farook attending last year's holiday party, held in the same conference room.
She heard from colleagues that the department held a baby shower for Farook and that he recently returned from paternity leave.
Reisinger left the job in May. She said the department was in turmoil, with many workers leaving over the last year because of problems with management.
"
Ye gods ... that's damnably depressing. And a new parent and all to boot? I hope to god that wasn't his wife with him. Damned odd, as others have pointed out, if it's a disgruntled employee. But what you posted about a lot quitting over problems with management? Ugh. I still will never understand taking out one's frustrations to this degree, though. I really can't fathom it. I doubt many of us ever will, tbh. I do admit an odd curiosity about what makes such minds tick, what makes the difference in someone who may by all accounts be fairly decent overall, even with some oddities, deciding that the death of others is the pricetag for them feeling better about something, or resolving something, or answering for something. What a clusterfuck.

The violence began around 11 a.m. at the convention building at the Inland Regional Center where employees with the county health department were attending a holiday event. Witnesses said at least two shooters opened fire, killing 14 people.
Another 17 people were hurt -- many wounded by bullets from automatic-style rifles, some injured in the panic to escape.
The shooters fled in a black SUV, prompting a huge police response in the area.
As the hours passed, the hunt for the suspects continued with a tip taking officers to a home about 10 miles away in Redlands. A vehicle similar in description to the suspect SUV pulled out and a chase began.
The SUV raced back to San Bernardino, with bullets and a device designed to look like a bomb flying from the truck, Meredith Davis with the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives told CNN affiliate KCAL/KCBS.
Suddenly, it stopped on a neighborhood street. Residents were stunned to hear the eruption of continuous gunfire. A man and a woman in the SUV were killed in the barrage of bullets that riddled the windshield.
A third person who was caught running near the scene was detained, but police aren't sure whether he was connected to either shooting.

I'm still not seeing any more info on the others, whether or not the person detained was involved, any of that. Anyone else have anything new they've seen?

I think because early on there wasn't a total number on dead injured and 20 dead or injured was the earliest ball park range.Tsaraine wrote:Where's the "twenty victims" statistic coming from? All the info I've seen has fourteen dead, seventeen injured.

It must be traumatizing to be related to someone who did something like this. I suspect most want to be allowed to grieve in peace, but in absence of official information the media will interrogate everyone to find something to report on.
