Do I really need to go grab a bunch of news stories about little kids accidentally shooting themselves, or other people, because of firearms that weren't securely stored?

The thread went off topic into a gun control type debate... Then, via the efforts of several people it managed to get back to the specific incident. And it would be nice if it could be on topic so that we can discuss details that emerge instead of having those details get lost in a debate that NSG has been having since 2002.

I am ... displeased that the ONLY name thus far released sounds like what the average American Joe would say is 'one o those damned terrorists', while not naming the others. It smacks of more media spin and fearmongering. We have people here in this nation who have had generations grow up here with names from all over the goram planet, ffs. By all means, lets stir up another dose of anti-Islamic sentiment and fear, and see if we can get any more mosques burned down, or people beaten.

Our media disgusts me. It truly does. Release them all, or wait until you have the goddamn information in full.

I frequently can't decide whether to be saddened or angered by it all. Anti-Muslim hate crimes tripled in France after the Paris attacks. Recently saw a video from Spotsylvania, Virginia (used to live near there), at a town hall meeting or something along those lines. Well-attended. A guy starts presenting plans for a mosque, before he starts getting shouted down by a guy saying "you are ALL terrorists! you are!" and another saying "Muslims is evil. They is. They is all evil. Muslims is evil."

Depends. It's pretty easy to kill someone with an open shot to the face (specifically, nose) if you know how. But it's also pretty damn easy to survive a round to the face, assuming it doesn't go straight backward into your brain/spinal cord.

This is maybe the daftest comment ever. What are the survival rates of punches to the face versus gunshot to the face? Source your figures.

We are not comparing pinches to the face to shots to the face, but deaths caused by rifle fire to deaths caused by bare-handed attacks.

I have a strong feeling you don't believe I'm better than that, but that isn't the point.

While I agree somewhat, I think the blame lies more with the police. They released one name, knowing it would be reported by SOME media outlet, and unlike the media they have a duty of care to consider public safety in what they release.

If they were going to release the name they should have also been more careful that they're identifying the right person. It seems there are more than one person of that name ...
