They're not "weapons for self-defence", they're not "good weapons". The gun is a tool to kill someone. A responsible gun culture does exist in Switzerland, but it is entirely different than the one in the US. The Swiss view gun ownership as a civic duty and as a tool of homeland defense from invading armies. Americans use guns as a defense against other Americans. The mentality is completely different.

As was said by someone else, that is exactly how Americans view the Second Amendment. And while the Swiss have high rates of gun ownership, but regulate the shit out of ammunition. Not much you can do with a gun when you don't have any bullets.

If i remember correctly, only government issued ammunition is heavily regulated. I could be wrong, but I believe ammunition can be bought at shooting ranges.
