So... America is an oligarchy now
...heh... what do you guys think about our new system of government...

Oligarchy is a form of government which means (at least by modern day definition)
The economic elite have far much more political power than the majority, who has little to no power.
When we vote it only chooses which oligarch will take a certain place, the majority of the time the oligarchs only care what the economic elite think and not of the majority.

I'am justing asking if we Americans are going to be okay.

OP stands for Original post or Original Poster you "not trying to be mean" lack a good op and mods round here hate short ops for which they tend to lock the thread rewrite the op to include a simple telling of the story and also put down how you feel about the situation

I would politely suggest expanding it as well. Perhaps elaborate on just how America is an oligarchy (maybe using quotes from an article if you wanted), and just why you think this is bad.

It is based in NYC.

Add this to the OP, and that is still probably not enough.

America's been an oligarchy. There's nothing new about this. This OP is not enough for the thread to last however.

No it isn't. But they tend to make more sensible choices regarding debt, i.e. not freaking out when seeing a trillion-dollar debt and realizing that much of it is, actually, irrelevant because of the extremely low interest rates and inflation.

Countries with excess capital simply wouldn't let their cash sit and rot; they lend. In fact, they're virtually begging other countries to borrow their money, so they can gain a miserable interest on it.

Also, as for the topic at hand, oligarchy is one of those terms that gets thrown about a lot - this was true even in ancient literature (it basically symbolised the opponents of 'democratic' Athenian factions in Thucydides); its meaning is very politicised. Wealth and power has always been concentrated to some degree in any society, and historically the US was not an exception, however, this becomes more troubling when disparities and inequities increase, and social mobility to said 'elite' decreases. Furthermore, as to an actual oligarchy itself, it entirely depends on what you classify as 'a small group of power-brokers', and whether you think they are the sole dominant force in American politics.

aka, debating whether the US is an oligarchy or not is possibly missing the wider point.

Because every thread in nsg must start with essentially a book report. I think they've gotten very carried away with the standards for OPs.

You actually have to, you know, provide proof of your statement.

It's a DEBATE forum. You have to provide the framework of the debate.

Not trying to spam but agreed. Show some evidence that America has become a oligarchy, like how political campaighns are almost completly made up of corperate funding,or how we meddle in the middle east so our companies can get oil cheaper. Me personaly, I believe America started becoming an oligarchy in the 70's and became on in the 90's, where they continue to rule to this day.

Things worked pretty well before people were forced to tpye the equivalent of an 8th grade current events assignment to start a thread.
