If I am reading this correctly (and I may not, so please correct me), the red is the SU-24's course? That looks a bit like an accident on the Russian pilots' part, certainly not needing to result in death (and the first source says one of the pilots is dead).

He flow through it 2 times, the 2nd time was one time too much
he got warned ten times

trying to troll like little vlad likes to do on the internet doesn't work in reality

It was an orbit that intruded on Turkish airspace twice. The first time got a warning (or 10), the second time saw the Su-24 shot down. Some nations are actually capable of defending their own airspace.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Not to mention the fact that this isn't the first time in recent weeks that Russian aircraft have violated Turkish airspace.

I'm guessing that the Su-24 only passed through that little notch of land. How long could it have spent in the territory? 18 seconds? That's hardly good enough reason for Turkey to intercept the plane.

According to the Turks, five min, apparently it is bigger than it looks, but, still, if it was that big, it was pretty clear that the pilot was either unaware he was in Turkish airspace and was on his way out.

I could maybe understand what Turkey did if they warned the pilot yet he still didn't leave Turkish airspace. But from what I can see they shot him down over Syria.

They warned him "ten times over five minutes", but he seems to have left Turkish airspace anyway.

No. This type of thing is not uncommon. It is not that big a deal. And Russia needs to learn to respect borders.

Absolutely. I don't even doubt one second when Turkey says that Russia violated their airspace.

I live in Estonia and in Baltic region Russia doesn't seem to care much about air borders either. Each year there are many air border violations like when their military cargo planes are flying from Kaliningrad to St. Petersburg they tend to violate air space as well. Russia has accustomed to think they will get away with it but now they got reality check.

What do you mean? Russia isn't going to go to war with Turkey over this. If anything, Turkish officials might be summoned to Moscow for a "please explain", Turkey will repeat that it was within its rights to protect its airspace and Russia will deny this. It's not the first time the Russian military has accidentally wandered into another country uninvited.

If the Turkish Air Force had to warn the pilots of the Su-24 for 10 minutes saying "cross this imaginary line and we'll shoot you" and the Russians didn't listen, Moscow has got no one else but its own pilots to blame.

I really doubt that Russia's jet crossed Turkish territory. We'll find out the truth in the coming days, but I'm actually going to back Russia's side of the argument here (something I never thought I'd say, considering my "Russophobia"), that the jet was above Syrian territory the entire time.

No Russia won't invade Turkey, but it's pretty obvious that Turkey isolating themselves even further with this move. Turkey has no friends.

Radar tracking plots all hits, regardless of whether they match or not. A few of the lines could be separate hits, or expected trajectories. The green box is the AoE. The blue line is more or less Turkey/Syria border.

Anything else I can help with?

So, they shot it down over Syrian territory, well after it had exited Turkish airspace?

Which is part of the issue, it was clearly an airframe in transit.

Proper protocol would be escort to prevent further incursions and verify intentions, that would be what the US would do if an Su-24 accidentally strayed through the Bering.

The Su-24 would wave and acknowledge the fighter escort, they'd chat while flying, and then the Su-24 would fuck off back to wherever.

Turkey decided instead to clear hot their F-16 pilot, at least, I hope someone in their chain gave them hot clearance. If the F-16 pilot decided on his own to do this, he needs to be punished.

In 1980 I was in Turkish Kurdistan, and was startled by a squadron of helicopters flying low overhead. Later that day I asked a local officer what had happened. He explained that Saddam was shelling some of his Kurds, as he was wont to do, and a couple shells had fallen on the Turkish side of the border. Obviously that was an accident but Turkey had to go shoot at an Iraqi army base to emphasize their displeasure. That's just how the game is played over there.

They did receive ten warnings and refused to respond while violating the airspace of a country that had very recently announced its intention to treat all possible threats from the south of its border as hostile and who'd shot down multiple airspace violators in the recent past.

I don't really know what the Russian government expects to have happened.
