No shit.

Also, mind, I'm not even asking because I'm into blowing up schools, but really, it makes no sense to think a 14 year old has the kind of materials to make a good household explosive that can kill people and put it inside the lining of a pencilcase.

The fact that he got so much stuff for taking apart a pre-made clock is absolute bullshit.

Now that he (or his family) is using for $15 million, this is even worse. They deserve at most a few hundred dollars for what happened.

horrible example, that's coming from me using my custom gaming pc as I type

it clearly looks like a computer, just with the side taken off

It dosn't look like a damn bomb inside a case and anyone with half a brain can see that it's clearly a computer that's merely missing the side panel.

And anyone who has ever seen a clock can tell that the clock in the pencil case was just a clock with its outer shell removed.

Seriously - look at it. There are no extra parts or parts missing. Not one.

the average reasonable person doesn't have to think it is a bomb, it's enough to establish that the average reasonable person COULD (without negligence or unnatural levels of technical illiteracy); hence from the fact that I can point to several other people whose first impression is that it is a bomb... I can conclude that it is possible for reasonable people to think it is a bomb on a first impression.

Unless you want to assert that all of us are unreasonable. But reasonable really just means average member of the community and why should you have any reason to think I intentionally/accidentally picked all outliers?

That thing would never make it through the front gate of a military post without the kid being detained at the very minimum. If it looked so much like a clock you would have a case.

And yet you have enough parts that, with enough force applied, could blow up and hit you.

Maybe someone else built it for him or got it for him from abroad and then instructed him to use it

I've also heard that some terrorist cells use children for some operations

If someone competent built it, it wouldn't look like a digital clock in a pencil case. It would look like a backpack. You can fit a lot more explosives and plenty of nails and shit for shrapnel.

I assert nothing. I merely demand proof that your views on this are in any way indicative of a reasonable person (a claim YOU made).

I don't really think you picked anyone. I think you pulled this straight outta your ass and didn't even wash it first before posting it in the thread.

No, I never made that assumption, im merely pointing out that being 14 really doesn't mean anything in this context.

I do believe he made the "clock" but I think his father made him do it a certain way to cause a scene.

If you don't have a badge saying your are a soldier or IT, you won't get into a military base with a PC in your hands without getting detained either. Because it's larger and more useful as a bomb container.

If said open carry advocate were detained and questioned without an attorney present (or, in the case of a juvenile, without his parents present), I'd support his right to sue the hell out of the police.

Well, I don't think the teacher was racist, so I don't know what the fuck you're talking about.

I think she was incompetent and stupid and blew up an innocent case way out of proportion and, that given she never even evacuated the area, it is more likely she knew (or believed) it wasn't a bomb, so it is either incompetence, stupidity, or racism.

You take your poison.

I looked at the high res photo. It looks nothing like a bomb to me.

However, that's equally worthless. What IS pertinent is that no one - from the original confiscating teacher to the arresting officers and everyone in between - thought it was a bomb.

Lawsuit threat letters usually start with high numbers. Then they settle for much less.
