Why should I lose one class of pe in return for this?

Postby Unnamed island state » Tue Nov 17, 2015 7:55 pm

The name for this thread is baity for a reason, I'm relatively pissed off. So I don't know about you, but where I am, in my school system, we are required to take an extra period of science in stead of gym in our block schedule(which I really don't miss either but that's not the point). What is the point of this? Really, do they think we'll produce more gdp if we know how to tell igneous rocks from sedimentary rocks? I really hate it, instead of having us have an extra period of trigonometry they have us memorize dumb stuff that will never be useful.

So I end with this question, is this extra attention given to high school science justified somehow? My view (as you can probably tell by now) is that there is no way to justify this. Not only is the way in which the subject taught, unprovoking of actual thought. But I read somewhere that industries related more towards physical sciences actually don't aid gdp growth in post industrial economies so much, service sector economies require lawyers and computer engineers, not marine biologists.

Oh, the angst. Yeah, schools don't do a whole lot right in teaching children. I don't think this in particular is that "stupid" though.

Yes, even if you don't plan on being a scientist, general information doesn't hurt.

My point is, why not have an extra period when I could be learning trigonometry instead? A subject which I'm sure everyone agrees is more important than learning about organelles.

Ideally, everyone would be scientifically literate. Science is too important in society and everyday life for people to not understand the implications of modern research.

Well all you have to do is graduate become an administrator then you can dictate what classes the schools can teach other then that just quit your bitching I learned biology in highschool but I'm majoring in History w/ a minors in Criminal Justice so biology won't do shit for me but do you see me complaint about it no so just deal with it.

No, I don't agree that learning about your cells is less important than trigonometry.

I can assure you that society isn't going to die off if I'm not forced to take dedicate an extra period out of my schedule to memorizing the names of cell layers.

Let's let the people who wan't to do science learn it, but everyone benefits from developing actual thinking skills so just force them to learn trigonometry instead of useless stuff.

The addittional classes taken should be up to students at this level, they are the ones who know what skills their hopeful future path requires. For some, that is science; for others, it could be math or something else. But aside from basic knowledge in major subjects, students should be able to have greater decisions over what they learn (especially as they get in higher schooling levels).

Implying you're more likely to use cosines and secants than science.

Though I suppose you might want to become a mathematician or engineer or pilot or something else that involves heavy math, but for most people an extra period of trig would be absolute hell. Should there be an extra period of science? That's debatable, but ultimately no, if one period is enough for math or art, then one period should be enough for science. Also, cutting PE out is stupid, PE is an important class because for some people it's the only time they get to play any sport or sport-like activities, and get to be physically active. I like PE because I get to take my mind off of schoolwork for a period, and it helps me wake up.

Point is it sounds like you have to do extra work in a class you don't like and you fail to see that not everyone is like you. May not be what you're going for but that's how you come off. Either way the extra period is stupid.

Not chemistry. I know for fact that physicists who competed in Soviet olympiad contests nearly failed their chemistry tests.

Surprise, surprise: physics is a branch of science.

the entire point is to give you some general information about the world like how it was formed and stuff and see if you are interested or particularly good at any of them.

also the idea that everything should be based on GDP growth and that's it is completely ridiclous, sorry
