Well this sounds oddly familiar to the post 9/11 hysteria towards Sikhs, and Muslims in the U.S.

Because it is a repeat of the post 9/11 hysteria.

Just as predicted...*sigh*

No it'll fuel even more rampant xenophobia in France which will then in turn fuel more terrorism. Just like it did after 9/11. The French bitched at us when it happened and now they're walking down the same path. I'd be smug if it weren't for the fact this is serious shit that is going to end up with lives and rights lost.

It seems the Faithful Word Baptist Church decided to do a sermon on the French attacks.

You can listen to it here.

Naturally, people weren't all that happy.

The only reason this piece of shit and his followers aren't blowing shit up and gunning people down is because the west has a stable legal system. Unlike the middle east...which frequently doesn't.

Crimes committed by Muslims will be a pan-Islamic plot and proof of Islam's inherent evil. On the other hand crimes committed by non-Muslims will merely be the acts of loners who do not represent their belief system at all.

43 students missing in Mexico, all probably dead, nobody bats an eye.
People die in France after already being attacked in January and who should have been expecting something due to France being part of the coalition against ISIS and everybody loses their minds.

But enough ranting, I still have a heart.

I've personally stayed out of this thread for a number of reasons, but after a few days, I thought I should chip in.

As part of a four minute editorial on Australia's Channel 10 opinion editorial program 'The Project', aired about two days after the attacks in Paris, presenter and academic Waleed Aly outlined what some of us on this thread have pointed out:

  1. That ISIL, as a terrorist organisation, is using these attacks, both those planned by them and others falsely taken credit for, as a 'divide and conquer' mechanism.
  2. That, if the fear that pervaded our societies for over a decade and a half, the self-proclaimed 'caliphate's' rhetoric and continual barbarism across Iraq and Syria, and the natural, worldwide anger that would be generated in the wake of such an atrocity, were taken out of the equation, ISIL would have limited legitimacy to stand on.
  3. And, most importantly, that we, both in Australia and within global society, should not allow ourselves to be divided against those Muslims who are appalled by these brigands' (ISIL's) barbarism, or against those who are displaced and fleeing the conflicts that wrack the region.

A YouTube-posted recording of this editorial can be found here. A related article from The Age.

As just an ordinary member of Australian society, one who isn't exactly too well read up on the nuances of the cultural divides, politics and inter-demographic conflicts of much of the Middle East, I cannot even remotely suggest a "one size fits all" solution to the ongoing conflicts that have been tearing the region apart since 2003 (if not far before that); I personally think that such a solution is practically impossible. It is clear that the traditional "warhawk"-advocated approach to the matter in the past - when suggested and utilised in isolation, I must emphasise - is clearly not working. I'm personally aghast at one of the prior suggestions here that deem that nothing short of the deployment of tactical nuclear missiles or ICBMs would 'solve' ISIL - a concept of warfare that was deemed utter insanity since the nadir of the Cold War and still is by the vast majority of nations today.

However, it is also clear that ISIL and the various militant organisations within the region must be dealt with if the region is to begin to be stabilised. That will certainly require reexamining and moving towards resolving some of the deeper issues that plague the region and which, directly or indirectly, enable these groups to continue to operate. It will also require new approaches and rethinking from national politicians and military commanders, both regarding the Middle East and at home (while not alienating those members of the population who disagree with ISIL, regardless of ethnicity), towards a resolution; so far, these seems to be still up in the air for debate.

As for the citizens of Paris and those who have been affected by the events of last week, all I can really offer in any tangibility right now is my sympathies.

Reports of heavy gunfire coming in from Paris. There's an ongoing operation in St. Denis as I post.

Here’s a quick run-down of what we know about current events in St Denis, where it is currently 5.50am:

“Heavy gunfire” has been reported in St Denis, a northern Paris suburb. St Denis is where the Stade de France, one of the targets of Friday’s attacks, is located.
Shooting took place during a police operation reported to be linked to the search for the so-called “ninth attacker” – believed to be on the run.
Some local media reports that a number of police officers have been injured in the operation; this has not been confirmed.
Roads have been closed off and the police operation appears to be ongoing, with large numbers of police officers and police vehicles in the area.

There have also been two Air France flights diverted, one to Salt Lake City and the other to Halifax, due to “anonymous threats made in a phone call."

The SLC diversion was provoked due to a "security incident".

with all of the violence in Mexico that is....sad to say, to be expected almost. Still a tragedy nonetheless, but not as much of a shock as this.

I might be an American and I know that we have a reputation for butting heads with Europeans over some things, but I still wept watching the news Friday night. I spent six hours watching the broadcasts until I finally had to sleep. America, as a French ally, needs to do whatever she can to support them. I am just worried that this is only the start. I'm worried for our German and British brothers and sisters, the rest of NATO, and my own country especially. How do you fight an insurgency that has declared war on western ideals?

If anyone interested has fast internet but no TV, you might want to check out a live news stream on Youtube or another website. Its too bad I can't find a live stream of FNC but Sky News is just as good being one of that channel's sources.

The thing is, ISIS is in Eurasia, while the cartels, who are also an insurgency that has declared war the US, but is right on doorstep.
However, I digress, the thread is about the poor souls in Paris.

I seriously doubt the narco cartels have declared a war on the US and its way of life. Americans are their most important customers by far.

Certainly, but they sure as hell don't want to bring down the US as a country. Heck, I doubt they even want to bring down Mexico as a country. Just secure the monopoly on drug trafficking without any competition.
