I think all of my friends with good language skills have encountered someone who refuses to understand that white people can speak Japanese. I've had people who "can't" understand me when I order at Subway, my partner and I have had issues ordering Pizza where, despite ordering correctly in Japanese, they decide we must not understand the language and only give us our total by showing us the receipt. My partner gets super stared at everywhere because he's super tall.

Oh, and I have a friend whose Japanese girlfriend was slapped for walking with him. Someone also told him to go back to Brazil (he's not from Brazil, he's from Canada, he's just brown).

I think actually Brazilians have it worse here in general. For the most part, the worst white people get is stared at and sometimes outright discriminated against in housing or some other things because it's totally legal to say "no foreigners allowed", but that's pretty rare around Tokyo.

Add to that, there seems to be some animosity stemming from a Japanese diaspora to Brazil circa 1908, these Brazilian-Japanese people, at least quite a few of them, returning to Japan in the 1990s for work and stability.

It seems that certain organizations are working to eradicate this. Searching to institute laws that prevent such discrimination. But for what I'm gathering, the foreign residents who tend to have this problem tend to be non-Westerners. There was a particular case in 2005, of a Korean woman in Kyoto who sued, as she was banned from renting an apartment because she was not a Japanese resident. She filed a discrimination suit and won in Japanese court.

Racism is shitty and so is this restauranteur, but tensions with Somalians, and I emphasize Somalians, particularly refugees, not Africans, is not completely unfounded. Any Minnesotan who's been to North Minneapolis or some other segregated parts of the city can tell you that the Somalian refugees have effectively ghettoized themselves, and Minnesota has the highest turn out rate for jihadists leaving America to fight for ISIS. This shit needs to stop. In our typical Nordic compassion we've let in a lot of refugees who are to their core in contradiction with America's founding ideals.
