4 problems with my new 2015 forrester.

1. The cvt, sucks
2. The rear view camera is not refined enough, it can get washed out to where you don't see everything you need to.
3. The bluetooth stinks, 2 generations behind ford.
4. The brake pedal is too soft, the car stops fine, I juse hate the brake feel.

That said, I would buy again. Perfect car for us to downsize too from a minivan.

Also supposedly 2 and 3 have been fixed on the 2016's.

Damn modern cars gotta lot sci fi shit on them, my car doesn't even have roll down windows.

If I could afford a second car for me, a 65 Mustang, 51 hudson, or a 60's microbus, would be it.

Currently have a little 1litre Vauxhall corsa.
When I was in the Kalahari I did work out plans to steal the 1984 Toyota landcruiser they had on the farm and drive it all the way back home, simply because it was awesome. It sounded like a tank, drove over/through most things, and had more pulling power than a damn tractor....god I miss that truck....

Wow. I don't even know what that is. Honestly, the only Toyota truck I know is Tundra.

It was essentially a 2/3 seater cab mounted to a motorised wheelbase made of pure badassery. The back could house a small herd of antelope, but the whole vehicle wasn't even big (compared to the size of wagons these days) so was fairly nimble once you got to know and understand the engine/daemon that lived under the bonnet.

Blasphemy! The Lineatronic CVT is the best transmission ever, I can say that as a proud co-owner of a 2014 Subaru Forester 2.0XT. Besides that, its 177 HP engine is amazing in Sport Mode.

Should this move work out for me financially I have a promise to keep to Veronica, so I've been window shopping the mule that I'll drive while I do a working restoration (she'll never be a show pony, that would be disrespectful). Current candidates are a diesel VW Caddy 'cause I'm already used to not going fast anyway or a stepside Chevy Luv for weird nostalgic reasons...my tastes have taken some weird turns.

If for some reason my regular car brain takes over that mild insistence on utilitarianism I'm after an MGB GT. Still cheap(ish), I like the look of it. Small, I've been driving a van for sooo long.

But as for 'second car'...alright, buckle up. This is stupid, above my skill set, and crazy convoluted.

First, this takes three initial purchases. Two beat up MG As I saw at Beverly Hills Motors for cheap, and a beat up Jaguar Mk II.

First, all the good bits on the MG As are consolidated onto one of them and anything left missing is replaced, painted, handed to the girlfriend who likes MG As. This justifies the level of nonsense to follow.

The XK6 engine comes out of the Jag, it's converted to triple carb E-type/D-type set up and put in the chassis of the stripped MG A. A diesel BMW engine goes into the Jag and the rest is restored stock. This is the cruiser, the car I or the girlfriend drive when we don't want to fight.

Back to the MG A chassis with the XK6 engine in it. Minor hot rodish updates to brakes and suspension and then...a LaDawri Castilian/Victress Vixen body is put on it. I know that American Specials are supposed to be foreign underpinnings, fiberglass and then a big honking American V8, but that just looks to me like it should have the sound of a Jaguar engine instead of a big block.

This will, in all likelyhood, never happen. Even though I actually found a place to get the Victress body. Alas.

You might be right, actually.

Well, once they get CVTs that can handle high torque outputs, they will probably take over all the automatic transmissions. Chrysler has a 9 speed, GM and Ford are developing 10 and 11 speeds. There has to be a point of diminishing returns on more gears, though; and god only knows how expensive it is to fix a transmission with 11 gears when it cost 2 grand to fix one with only 4.

The point was a smaller crossover is cheaper than a bigger suv. A traverse is still an suv.

Traverse is a crossover, and it has almost the exact same dimensions as a Tahoe so it's not really smaller.

Starting MSRP of a Traverse is $16,000 lower than that of a Tahoe, so you're still correct that a crossover is cheaper.

No no, she gets all the parts that do because all I need is the chassis of the MG A for my Frankencar, so all the good bits that aren't chassis and steering go on the girlfriend's MG and anything I can't harvest gets replaced with new bits from Moss Motors. But, it will still be an MG, so I'm sure something will go wrong.

Gullwing Motors had a LaDawri Daytona forever that I also wanted. I used to work the Monterey Historics for Speed and eventually it made me obsessed with American Sports Specials, these hobbled together garage concoctions that I can't get out of my head now. I'd rock a Devin SS too, if the opportunity came up.

Welcome! One of the moderators suggested that I should start a thread about cars in general and I saw a similar one on the BeamNG forums. This is a thread where you can say anything about cars: love them, hate them, say which ones you own, which you want, what have you seen a person doing with a car... anything car related.

I'll start (knowing that it would evolve into something else):
In the last 10 years SUVs have been steadily replaced by crossovers. In my opinion this is a step back for motoring. Yes, not many people took SUVs offroad, but at least they had the ability to do it. In the crossovers they don't. We also shouldn't forget about the fact that crossovers have less interior space than similarily-sized SUVs. In my opinion ditching SUVs for crossovers was a step back for motoring.

Crossovers are just smaller SUVs but are based upon car unibodies, instead of pickup truck frames. So in theory, they use slightly less fuel, cost less money, and are easier to drive for the general populace. Most crossovers are just fatter cars, which ruin styling and handling. I think they are just ghastly compromises.

I prefer actual cars, like sedans/saloons, wagons/estates, and coupés. The minivan/MPV and the SUV killed the good old station wagon.
