They most certainly succeeded, but they succeeded faster than they could properly process. Hence why it used to be Jerusalem that was the most holy city of Islam. Since the Syrian influences on the way Islam came into being as a codified religion were considered to be a bit too un-Arabic according to the Arabian conquerors, this was later remedied by introducing the ancient city of Mecca as totally the most holy place on earth, y'all. That way the Arabs could continue to convince themselves they were the undisputed Islamic master race, even though that is probably not the official religious doctrine.

The Arabs ansolutely deluded themselves into thinking they were The Islamic Master Race. Muhammad never thought that. In fact, according to Bukhari (and almost universily accepted as a hadith by western historians as well as all islamic ones) he said "none of you are superior. The black os not superior to the white and the white is not superior to the black, wxept in manner of merit/piety" (depends on the translation) but yeh.
And they properly progressed before the Khwarazem decided to fuck things up with the Mongols.
The Mutazila encouraged and sanctioned reason, science and technical advancement as the sole purpose of the faith. Sufis called for tolerance and spiritual enlightenment even after they were gone. This is irrefutable.
You can argue that it was really persians doing all the work. But you would be ignoring Baghdad. And ignoring that Persia were devout twelvers. And that their ayatollahs encouraged reason and advancement as a religious policy at the time while Europe was busy with their tilling and sheep.
Actually, come to think of it, their clergy was fairly advanced as well. Encouraging reasoning and science. In certain points of history.
