Probably because it is an increment of twelve. You know how God loves the numbers 3, 7, 12, and 40.

It'd be nice to know the significance of those numbers. :(

The numbers show up repeatedly.
To explain 40. To say "40 days and night" or "40 years" is a short hand way to say "a long f***ing chunk of time".

Yeah, I know that, but I want to know why that is significant. Why not 50? Why not 68.7? :p

40 probably arises out of random cultural development.
But it sounds as if you want the reasons not the significance.

And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth thread.

So, while we're doing (re-)introductions, I will hereby (re-)introduce myself as one of the CDT's resident Orthodox Christians, with a particular interest in providing long and detailed answers to people's questions about Orthodoxy. Also, I happen to be a communist, but politics doesn't come up very often in this thread, and that is as it should be.

In other news, if anyone is interested, here are the poll results from the previous three incarnations of the CDT:

The Christian Discussion Thread V wrote:Roman Catholic - 32%
Eastern Orthodox - 7%
Non-Chalcedonian (Oriental Orthodox, Church of the East, etc.) - 1%
Anglican/Episcopalian - 6%
Methodist - 4%
Lutheran or Reformed (including Calvinist, Presbyterian, etc.) - 10%
Baptist - 11%
Other Evangelical Protestant (Pentecostal, non-denominational, etc.) - 13%
Restorationist (LDS Movement, Jehovah's Witness, etc.) - 4%
Other Christian - 12%

The Christian Discussion Thread IV wrote:Roman Catholic - 34%
Eastern Orthodox - 7%
Non-Chalcedonian (Oriental Orthodox, Church of the East, etc.) - 1%
Anglican/Episcopalian - 6%
Lutheran or Reformed (including Calvinist, Presbyterian, etc.) - 9%
Methodist - 3%
Baptist - 11%
Pentecostal - 3%
Restorationist (LDS Movement, Jehovah's Witness, etc.) - 4%
Other Christian - 21%

The Christian Discussion Thread III wrote:Catholic - 31%
Eastern Orthodox - 10%
Non-Chalcedonian (Oriental Orthodox, Church of the East, etc.) - 1%
Lutheran - 7%
Baptist - 10%
Reformed (Calvinism, Presbyterianism, etc.) - 5%
Anglican/Episcopalian - 6%
Restorationist (LDS Movement, Jehovah's Witness, etc.) - 2%
Non-Denominational - 15%
Other Christian - 13%

So, as you can see, the numbers have remained remarkably stable, when you account for the changes in categories. And all three of these polls had many hundreds of responses. Thus, I think we now have a very good picture of the general denominational breakdown of the Christians on NSG.

I don't mean to be overly critical, but I wish we'd have more new and diverse members in CDT, if you know what I mean. :(

I have always wondered if the Israelites were literally in the desert for 40 years, because if you look on a map, you will see that the distance they traveled is only about 300 miles, which would mean that they basically moved at the pace of less than ten miles per year. I realize that they did not always stay on track, and that they stayed at certain cities for months at a time, but still, this seems a bit exaggerated. Any thoughts on this?

Oh, I see what you're saying. I feel so sleepy now that I can't even read posts properly. :p
A JW missionary called me and asked if I have three minutes to listen to them.
I said five seconds already elapsed and that the person has only two minutes and fifty-five seconds to say something.
The person literally flipped out at me. :D

Could be, if you just consider the ancient population. I wouldn't have thought in that fashion, because God tells Abraham that his descendants will be as many as the number of sand grains in the world. 144,000 would not even be a speck, compared to the number of sand grains in the world.

Where in the Bible is that said, exactly?
Traditionalist Catholic, Constitutional Monarchist, Habsburg Nostalgic, Distributist, Disillusioned Millennial.

"In any case we clearly see....That some opportune remedy must be found quickly for the misery and wretchedness pressing so unjustly on the majority of the working class...it has come to pass that working men have been surrendered, isolated and helpless, to the hardheartedness of employers and the greed of unchecked competition." -Pope Leo XIII, Rerum Novarum
