I love Korea. Between Kpop, the traditional culture and architechture, or the right attitude towards genetic engineering, I'm not sure what I like most about it. Also thank Sejong hangul is easy to learn.

I hope this thread is revived. It seems to depend on how many people who are interested in Korea or Koreans are interested in this thread.

Sadly, based on my past 13 years on the site, NS has virtually no Koreans... every once in a while there will be diaspora (e.g. Korean American) but not ones that can actually speak the language.

That's right. I don't think I've ever seen Koreans in NS. Even if they have, I've rarely seen them working in forums.

Korea is the leading country in Asia in terms of genetic engineering. As much as I love China, they arrested the guy who made HIV-immune designer babies, so yeah.

I'm glad you like Korea. "Right attitude towards genetic engineering" seems to refer to the 2006 arrest of those involved in stem cell research manipulation.

I spent a year living in South Korea (Seoul specifically) while I was a university student.

Absolutely loved the city (although I'm sure many Koreans would likely disagree with me about Seoul), and I do hope to go back for a visit in the near future.

I'm glad you have a good memory of Korea.

Maybe it's because I live in a place other than Seoul, but I think Seoul is a good city. Of course, I am sure that people living in Seoul will not think well of Seoul because of its high prices and housing prices.

What do you like about Seoul? I'm applying for a scholarship there.

Honestly, I'm not sure I'd want to live in Seoul long term. As much as the locals are all very welcoming and how living there for a year was perfectly enjoyable, I think the hectic nature of the place would start to irritate me over time, and I'd go for somewhere outside of the city itself.

That said, where I was living in Seongbuk, we were right next to Bukhansan (huge mountain park for hiking). I'd highly recommend the place if you're a bit outdoorsy. Although try to avoid Saturdays if you can, because it gets insanely crowded.

A bar in Gangnam called Once In A Blue Moon was a favourite of mine on the evenings as well, although it might not be your sort of thing specifically, given that it's basically a jazz club.

Anyway, I certainly hope you enjoy your scholarship over there!

Interesting, thanks for sharing. I'm glad to hear the rumours about Korea being not so welcoming to foreigners to be untrue. And lastly, thank you!

Did you learn Korean beforehand or did you start learning when you were already there?

I was in my third year of undergrad study by the time I was living in Korea, so I'd been learning spoken Korean for two years at that point, although writing Hangul was something I was definitely less familiar with.

As part of our first two years, we each had a student contact in Korea who we would speak to regularly, and then in third year, we'd finally meet them.

Man, that sounds like a godsend! I wish I went through a similar program when I was in China.
