I want to change my major....need help/advice

Postby Sir William Penn » Sat Feb 06, 2010 1:51 am

Hi. I am a sophomore half way through my winter quarter in college. At the moment, my plans are to major in Political Science and get a BA.

However lately I've been considering changing my major to computer science or engineering, and getting a BS.

Is this possible? Is there hope? Or is it too late. I need advice! Thank you.

Certainly. talk to your adviser. It might add a semester or two but almost everyone changes their majors at some point.

Most people change your major. If you still have any interest, you might have enough credits for a minor or even a double major. Talk to your advisor, and think about it. What do you want to do? I enrolled in my school's School of Hospitality, but only took classes in that school for one semester. After that, I took all of my classes for English education, and only officially changed my major for my senior year because BU requires that one is enrolled in the college they graduate from for a full academic year.

I mean at sophomore level it should be pretty easy. If you have taken upper level poli sci courses poli Sci will just become a minor. Or the courses will become elective courses.
going from a Ba to BS means you will have to take more Math and science classes, but that's not really a big deal.

One of the reasons that so many pre-req's are the same regardless of major is because it is expected that you will gain clarification on your interests as you progress, and changes in major are expected. Talk to your advisor, do some interest and aptitude testing, and interview and job shadow people in the career you think you want to pursue.

Depends. My degree is technically a BS, but I never had to take a math course (my SAT score was high enough for me to opt out of the requirement) and the science requirement was 3 lab sciences, one higher than the BA hospitality requirement.

Depends on the school
Mine was 3 math classes normally calc, stats, one other. and three non major lab sciences normally physics, biology, and a criminal justice class (school has a really large criminal justice program so it is easy to get into).

I think the average student changes his/her major five times before finally settling, largely because most students have multiple interests. Certainly engineering and computer tech would give a slight (given the economy) advantage over political theory or any of the humanities, but that's not the only thing you should consider. Where do your strengths lie? What are you passionate about? Your advisor should be able to give you some aptitude and preference tests which may help.

Indeed. My academic history of "declared" majors - undecided, Forestry, Information Science, English Lit, and finally Poli Sci.

I'm tossing up returning to school to study either elementarty education or industrial relations after I return home this year...

I expect it's a US school - some of them do that.

Don't worry about academic requirements and administrative BS. Learn about what you're interested in.

Your councilor's the best move, although, I wouldnt recommend computer engineering, unless you really like Best Buy or plan to move to India, :?

As a matter of fact, I went the other way around, I went from Computer Science to Political Science, so I can understand the switch ;)

However, our system is vastly different. Anyway, I suggest talking to your advisor, and be really really certain that political science is what you want. You do not want to change around a 3rd time or so :)

how close are you to getting the minor in poli sci? because i would always recommend keeping your options open by tacking on minors if you are close to having them anyways and you find the subject matter interesting. also, throw a philosophy minor on for good measure, no matter what you do. philosophers have more and better sex than engineers and make more money than your standard non-engineering or math-based major holders.

If I did my undergrad again I would take on Philosophy as a minor or double major.
On its own it just makes you an interesting Dishwasher. But in tandem with any other skill it improves performance and end pay in any profession.

Also join at least 2 extracurricular activities.
One you enjoy, and another one with honor's in its name.
Get elected to officer positions, believe it or not this helps you get into graduate school and get jobs.

Actually, for me the counter-intuitive claim was the one about sex. I do not think certain majors are more "sexually attractive" than others.

You take fewer classes. Instead of 6 classes a semester, you take 3 classes a quarter.
If you do a summer session in most schools it is about the same.
I think statistically short duration classes score better, the only problem I can see is with research and writing classes so little time to research and write.

Several schools still use a quarter system. WPI, for example. It isn't common, but it does exist.

Hehe, I guess I haven't mentioned enough that I'm studying under the quarter system.

Yay for midterms stuffed into the same week!
