That teacher should be freakin' fired. You can't do that to any student. You can't force someone to deny their religion, it's against the DoI and the Constitution. (dec. of Independence)

A shame the teacher didn't do it to any student.

1) This event didn't happen.
2) The Declaration of Independence is not a legal document. It has no power.

The student was not forced to deny her religion and the Declaration of Independence is not law.

There's an oddly common misconception that the DoL is binding.

It's not my opinion, I was in that. Evangelicals WANT to feel oppressed, so they can justify their views and negative feelings toward society and see themselves as chosen.

I don't need to imagine an invisible layer of magical demons and prayers taking place around me to feel good about myself or to believe in god.

The Declaration of Independence carries no legal weight in the US, and the event didn't happen.

Not unlikely. Considering it's Texas.

I think we are doing a disservice to both 12 year olds and the resilience of religious faith.

By that age, one should be able to differentiate the concept of Faith (an excellent and valuable thing) and Facts (another useful concept).

A 12 year old should also be able to state and make an argument with which she disagrees.

Asking a student to differentiate between Faith and Facts, or even to write an essay or other assignment that supports a proposition with which that person happens to disagree are both age-appropriate assignments for a 12 year old.

Everyone should be able to work with assignments that contain ideas with which we disagree. Teaching a 12 year old Methodist the distinction between fact and myth will not degrade her faith or devotion to her God. Nor will learning to work with a teacher who apparently posses both strong atheist views and a confrontational teaching style. On the contrary, young people of faith can only benefit from these experiences.

If one's faith is so fragile that it is harmed by an assignment like this, perhaps one should consider agnosticism. Its a lot less work.

It's filled with uber-patriotic Christian fundies. Like a lot of the South.

I wanted to say "Texas is like" but all my comparisons come down to "it's the texas of America" which is no help whatsoever.

Plus, I don't think you understand how stupid that sounds. 3% of the population oppressing 70% with demons that they don't believe in? I don't get it.

Ironically, over the next decade or so, Texas might turn blue.
