NYPD police officer shot in Harlem

Here we go again on the issue of gun control and Second Amendment rights in America. -_-

An NYPD officer was shot and killed on duty yesterday in Harlem. His name was Randolph Holder. He was chasing a gunman who stealed a bike. The officer was shot in the head. He died at Harlem Hospital at 10:22PM EST. The suspect was shot in the leg; he is expected to be under custody of the police when released today from another hospital.

That is why in the UK they wouldn't run after the suspect like that, they'd radio it in and let other officers safely outflank him. Bad tactics are bad.
But is this even really news, don't something like 300 police officers die in America every year?

Just last week Ireland held the funeral of the 88th police officer to die in the line of duty. Most Gardai aren't armed. We must be doing it wrong.

The possibility of getting killed by violent criminals is one of the risks inherent to being a police officer. It's unfortunate, but everyone who signs up for the job is well aware of this. I'm not sure what makes this incidence of it happening particularly news- or discussion-worthy.

300 police officers are shot and killed in the line of duty yearly in the United States.
10,000 defenseless civilians are executed by police officers yearly in the United States; plus all the actual criminals who are killed rather than arrested.

I can't say I feel even an ounce of anger; however I do think it's awful for the officer's friends and family...

Then again, if the police weren't so generally brutal, callous, and militarized; and weren't allowed to get away with mafia-like operations, violence against law enforcement would drop significantly; back to the way it used to be when there still was mutual respect!

(Also, I'll freely admit I have a bias; since I once got jailed for calling the police to protect me from a madwoman, and they ended up attacking me instead...)

I am going to object to the loaded terminology. Failures in target identification and officers shooting first because they thought someone was armed who wasn't is not "execution".

I also read about police officers straight-up killing people for no reason with alarming regularity; I won't link to hundreds of articles across literally 50 different newspapers though - those should be very easy to find...
I'm not saying target identification has to be perfect every time, especially when you only have a split second to decide... But opening fire on people who are clearly unarmed and not aggressive cannot ever be justified. If someone is waving around what looks to be a pistol,and doesn't put it down when order to; that's a different story... (Referring to that kid who was killed earlier this year. Sadly I can't recall his name, there were so many others...)
