Voting vs Video Games

Postby Infected Mushroom » Tue Oct 20, 2015 10:48 am

You can only keep one, you lose the other one.

The right and ability to vote VS the right and ability to play video games

Tomorrow you will wake up and you will retain one set of rights while losing the other set.

Either you will become a person who can continue to show up once or twice every year to write a ballot in your free time (but who can no longer play any video games for the rest of their life)... or you will remain a person who can continue to enjoy playing video games for the rest of their life (but who can no longer show up once or twice every year to write a ballot in their free time)

1. Which do you choose? Which is more important to you personally and why?

2. Is the right to vote as it applies to you personally overrated?

(as a clarifier, you don't know whether or not every other person on the planet is also faced with the same dilemma. It is a possibility that you are the only one with this dilemma, it is also a possibility that some/all other people on the planet also have to make this choice; factor that into your decision as you will)

Assume that whatever you choose is irreversible and irrevocable, it operates by magic

My opinion

The right to voting is overrated. It makes no difference whether I personally can or can't vote, not to my personal life anyhow. Despite all of the propaganda, the right to vote as it applies to one person is really relatively worthless. I'm also not the type of person to be guilt-tripped into feeling ''irresponsible'' if I somehow don't exercise my ''responsibility'' to vote every year.

I can very well imagine a life without voting (everyone else can make the decisions for me and I am unlikely to be oppressed the very next day or even during my lifetime). On the other hand, a lifetime without being able to play games like Castlevania, Halo, and League of Legends would be unbearable. Life would become meaningless.

In my view, society has its priorities wrong. The right to vote really isn't such a sacred cow.

I choose to be involved in the inevitable movement to kill any idiot who would attempt to pass this into law.

Before I give an actual answer, does my decision effect the rights of OTHER people? If I can no longer vote, but everyone else can, then I'd definitely choose video games.

The right to vote is among the most important we have. It allows us to change our government without having to resort to revolutions, which have historically been fairly unpleasant affairs. That you would give it up rather than stop playing Castlevania, Halo, or LoL, is absolutely par for the course and not surprising in the slightest.

If we retain the right to vote, couldn't we just re-legislate our right to play video games?

No. Its only with respect to your rights, but you don't know whether or not other people are also forced to undergo the same dilemma.

Nah man, let them disenfranchise themselves to keep their video games. Then hold a referendum on criminalising the production, ownership, sale, or use of video games, consoles, or peripherals, and laugh while the gamers can't do a thing to stop it passing. Then after a week give them their games and franchise back.

In the mean time, watch how the economy plummets and how organised crime will import games into the country. If you suddenly see gangsters digging up Atari games in Alamogordo, New Mexico, do not be surprised.

Just ban anything which requires a subscription fee, microtransactions or anything by Blizzard; except Starcraft of course- the South Koreans would surely boycott all our exports if we showed such blatent disrespect.

No no, if the legislators decide to ban video games, well, the last time they banned a huge industry.... I only go from there :)

that really won't happen

It wouldn't happen in a society where gamers can appeal to their elected representatives to act to protect their rights. In a society where they are disenfranchised? Well, what will you do to stop it? Vote for someone else? 8)

the right to vote is overrated even in proportional representative systems. you poor sods stuck with FPP may as well bow down to your overlords.

I choose video games because of the loophole that still allows me to do stuff in my community, make submissions, sign petitions, undertake political advocacy, post on NSG, talk to a local councillor, lead a protest and play Assassins Creed, all without voting
