Arguing politics against people who fail to understand politics are foolish.

You cannot blame Obama for what Congress did.

You cannot blame Obama for the decisions of the Supreme Court

She continually tried to lay all blame upon Obama as if he held all the power of the government - He's a president, not a dictator. He's only in command of 33.33% of the government.

Honestly, although I get that religion is important to some people, I have a hard time believing that it is the sole designing factor of a person. If it becomes that, and jimmies are going to be rustle and I really don't care, I'm not seeing religion anymore. I'm seeing brainwashing. The search for the divine, IMO, doesn't cancel the search for ourselves. Not everything is about gods, and churches.

If it becomes that, I truly think some re-evaluation of what we believe and why is needed. We're supposed to revere the deity, not those who spread the message. Then it becomes a cult of personality and not about god anymore.

Your religion doesn't define who you are, in that you are right.

We are more than our religion, I think, when it comes to who we are as a whole. My life doesn't revolve around which priest am I supposed to follow, or which interpretation of God is the correct one. I just live with the belief that, if God is the deity I learned as a child, I hope I can become a better person so I can follow in what the deity I believe in believes is right.

Technically, the President appoints people to the Supreme Court, so he actually is responsible for a whopping 2/9 of the Supreme Court Justices. Clinton takes the fall for another two, as do Reagan and G. Bush (inc. the Chief Justice). G. H. W. Bush finishes it off with one of his own.

Ah but, primo, you know how to make that distinction. Other people do not. It becomes about what Pastor So and So, and what Minister X or Y preached. They're just delivering the message. There's nothing else remarkable about them. When you start venerating mortals, it ceases to be about god. It becomes a cult of personality.

There's nothing godly or good about that.

The point of that matter was that the President doesn't sit in the Supreme Court and tell the justices how to vote or make their rulings. The Supreme Court is it's own branch of the government that decides what is and what isn't constitutional and then makes a decision.

The point that my friend was trying to make was, "Obama could have shot down the Supreme Court ruling that legalized same sex marriage." The immediately response was, "No, Obama could not shoot down the Supreme Court decision."

Laws were made banning same sex marriage in many states, the Supreme Court looked at those laws and determined they were unconstitutional. The laws were revoked, done deal.

Oh, yeah, I agree, that point is indefensible. I assumed it was going to be something about the Supreme Court being partisan - and even then, Republican appointments hold a majority.
