To be fair, Orthodox Christianity doesn't imply the Russian Orthodox Church - and even if it did, the Orthodox are faaaaaaaar less united than, say, Catholicism. Your average western Orthodox believer is no more likely to be a bigot than your average western Catholic believer. That's not to excuse the Pope's horrible statements on trans people, which make Kiril look soft, but the average lay Catholic already largely ignores the Vatican on issues like birth control, so there's no reason to take Papal statements - or Patriarchal statements - as indicative of the faith as a whole.

I agree that the Russian position on LGBT rights - societally, and the position of the Russian state itself - is hot garbage, though. It does seem like Putin is trying to use LGBT people as a convenient scapegoat. Which is ironic considering how very, very gay Putin comes off as - but then Putin is hot garbage even if he's closeted hot garbage.

In happier news, I'm doing okay now I think? Or at least I'm feeling less hairy, blobby and gross now I'm working harder on the diet and whatnot. I think my earlier crisis of faith was rooted in just feeling ugly and gross; I feel more feminine now I'm taking better care of myself.

I have often heard transgender people and others asserting that gender and biological sex are not the same thing. I have always wondered what the basis of this idea is. Because they feel that the body they have is not what they should have. We don't know exactly why this is. An excess or deficiency of certain hormones in the womb may well be one factor. All we do know is that some people with vaginas feel that they are men, some people with penises feel they are women, and people of both sexes feel that they belong to neither gender.

As I monitor this thread, I think you should know that there are no doctrinal differences between the autocephalous churches, but that I go to an OCA parish, which is also what Alex attends, IIRC. Moreover, the priest at my parish is an American convert, and most of my friends at the parish are as well.

And please lay off insulting Patriarch Kirill.

Just a curious homosexual guy here looking to learn:

Is there a widely accepted theory regarding the genetic or psychological causes and/or development of Transsexuality?

In a related question, is there any scientific study or base that could suggest that Transsexuality is simply a recessesive genetic trait like homosexuality?
Or perhaps hormonal?
