Playboy To Drop Nude Pictorials In Magazine Overhaul

Postby Yumyumsuppertime » Mon Oct 12, 2015 9:59 pm

Seriously, it's like Oscar Mayer just stopped selling hot dogs and bologna.

st month, Cory Jones, a top editor at Playboy, went to see its founder Hugh Hefner at the Playboy Mansion.

In a wood-paneled dining room, with Picasso and de Kooning prints on the walls, Mr. Jones nervously presented a radical suggestion: the magazine, a leader of the revolution that helped take sex in America from furtive to ubiquitous, should stop publishing images of naked women.

Mr. Hefner, now 89, but still listed as editor in chief, agreed. As part of a redesign that will be unveiled next March, the print edition of Playboy will still feature women in provocative poses. But they will no longer be fully nude.

Its executives admit that Playboy has been overtaken by the changes it pioneered. “That battle has been fought and won,” said Scott Flanders, the company’s chief executive. “You’re now one click away from every sex act imaginable for free. And so it’s just passé at this juncture.”

For a generation of American men, reading Playboy was a cultural rite, an illicit thrill consumed by flashlight. Now every teenage boy has an Internet-connected phone instead. Pornographic magazines, even those as storied as Playboy, have lost their shock value, their commercial value and their cultural relevance.

Playboy’s circulation has dropped from 5.6 million in 1975 to about 800,000 now, according to the Alliance for Audited Media. Many of the magazines that followed it have disappeared. Though detailed figures are not kept for adult magazines, many of those that remain exist in severely diminished form, available mostly in specialist stores. Penthouse, perhaps the most famous Playboy competitor, responded to the threat from digital pornography by turning even more explicit. It never recovered.

Previous efforts to revamp Playboy, as recently as three years ago, have never quite stuck. And those who have accused it of exploiting women are unlikely to be assuaged by a modest cover-up. But, according to its own research, Playboy’s logo is one of the most recognizable in the world, along with those of Apple and Nike. This time, as the magazine seeks to compete with younger outlets like Vice, Mr. Flanders said, it sought to answer a key question: “if you take nudity out, what’s left?”

This is a bit of a stunning development. Playboy was a rite of passage for my generation and my father's generation. However, numbers in the full article (available at the link) indicate that when they dropped nudity from their online presence, traffic actually shot up and the median age of the visitors dropped into a significantly more desirable demographic. I get the move. Still and all, I remember growing up in the days before images of naked women were available at the click of a mouse button. My friend Michael stole a stack of Playboys from his father (which his father figured out and said nothing about), and hid them in my bedroom closet (where my parents' housekeeper found them, told them, and they decided not to say anything). It was all downhill from there.

Thoughts? Memories? Can the magazine survive the revamp? Can Playboy gain relevance through this move?

If the magazine can unleash a brand new, blue ocean concept that captivates people in reading them, I say that they have a chance at reviving their sales. They don't necessarily have to have nudity to achieve that.

I remember Playboy as the centerfold mag to own.

However, meh, I think they made the right move now with the internet having tons of pictures online that their model is just not profitable anymore.

If they keep a good article quality, and picture quality is less sexual in nature and more sensual, it might be a good move for them.

I think they will slowly die or return to nudity. But that won't help them. The last time they tried that was with his daughter running things. Sales noticeably dropped off.

They have been trying to make nudity an art and it doesn't work for them.

Their writing can be good but so can any other magazine and some will do it better.

Not sure they will have anything to make them stand out.

Crimes committed by Muslims will be a pan-Islamic plot and proof of Islam's inherent evil. On the other hand crimes committed by non-Muslims will merely be the acts of loners who do not represent their belief system at all.

All print magazines are ultimately doomed, but some are going to die faster than others.

Even in the best case scenario, all they can do is delay the inevitable. The future belongs to websites. And in this case, that means pornographic websites, sadly.

its probably slightly ironic that the most popular mens magazines actually feature scantily clad men. of course those are Mens fitness Magazines so the muscle shots aren't necessarily suppose to titilate. following that you have the likes of GQ, Maxim and FHM which is the market this new Playboy would need to get into, it might be able to leverage its iconic status to get into that market. I don't know if it will, they'd probably have more luck concentrating on their online and TV platforms.

As to my own adventures, my father had preferred Penthouse and had those under his bed. I liked the Penthouse forum letters:). Later a group of council workmen over the fence from our school introduced me and my mates to Club International Magazine (a UK mag) and that became my favourite. I also remember a school bob-a-job fundraiser where an elderly couple hired us to clean out their shed and we hit the mother load of about 8 big boxes piled to the top with porn mags of various kinds - it was teenage boy heaven, until we got caught and had to flee the scene...

I saw this as a headline earlier and thought, "Oh...yeah, I guess the internet really kind of kills the centerfold." I mean, naked ladies are so ubiquitous on the internet I'm almost kind of bored with it. Or I'm getting old. Or both. Anyway, the short version is that last thing I'm going to do if I need a fix of boobies is go buy a stuff magazine. Right now my weirdness is between me and google. No need to bring a clerk or mail deliverer into the mix.

It probably makes more sense for Playboy to focus on the brand of Playboy instead of being the last place to look for boobies. Lifestyle, long form interviews, all that other shit they've been doing to pretend looking at boobies was a classy thing to do.

boobies.

Some variation of this is a lock to be part of the advertising.

They would be better off accepting the demise of the magazine and finishing it off quickly. They're just going to bleed more cash this way.

I think a lot of people like the articles, especially the people that are still reading it now with all the other porn that is out there. I've never read it myself. I am just going by what I have heard, but you are not the only person who says they read it for the articles.

If they develop online formats of their magazines, perhaps, they might minimize their downfall.
