Eliminating open defecation is crucial if they are to improve public health, but those new toilets will also need something crucial if it is to be widely used, and it is not just convincing people: the new toilets need locks for privacy.

i did puja on my motorbikes, my car, my new house - i don't worship any of these. actually, i don't even actually believe in these things..i just do it for the family or for a cultural occasion to have a gathering of friends and family.

and don't diss indian villager. i was one. my lifestyle then was probably the 'greenest' you can live. minimal footprint, minimal inorganic waste, everything local, healthy, eco-friendly and sustainable etc..

i would brush teeth with neem twigs or charcoal - which incidentally is what colgate adds to its toothpaste now..

i crap in my fields and let it decompose. no tissue paper or chemicals to clean toilet etc and then process sewage etc - when matt damon does that in martian, people go wow..amazing..

i bath in cold water pumped out of well or the canal water - no water heater

i used besan gram powder which is a flour made of type of chickpeas - no soap, no shampoo and no conditioner to restore ph from use of shampoo now they make facepacks and package it at premium prices for stuff i used for free..

handspun cotton clothes..no dyes and no effluents and pollutants etc..

ate out of banana leaves which were then thrown in a pit, that decomposed as fertilizer for field

no refrigerator, so everything was eaten fresh and with minimal cooking. we had bio gas where cattle dung was fed into a tank which decomposed and gave gas that can be burned for cooking.

we ate what we grew and shopped at the town market where everything was local. eating local is a big thing to be bragged about now..

we used reusable bags for everything. plastic bags were unheard of.

we had bicycle for local transport, bullock carts for family, and buses for long distance. and now having no car, and cycling to work is this amazing progressive idea in western cities now..

i slept outdoors most nights unless it was raining, in a bed made of ropes that had ventilated due to..well ropes. so no need for fan or air conditioning.

i generated ZERO trash and we had no trash bags, no trash cans, and no collection services and no landfill. whatever waste we generated were organic and were put into a fertilizer pit. we had a livestock like chicken, goats and cows which gave us eggs and milk.

i killed my own chicken and cleaned it and cut it. we grew a dozen and killed one or two every month and that way we always had a dozen throughout the year. our cows would help us farm, will eat the grass in the unused parts of the farm, and give us milk. raw milk from braums is all the rage now in suburbia i used to milk the cows as well. that's as fresh and raw it can get.

so...don't diss the indian villager. his lifestyle was pretty fucking amazing now that i look back.
