I thoughtit was immanent screen death...every so often the screen acts like something has shorted out and goes blank but I found that switching through CRT/LCD using Fn F8 brings me back up. Is it a virus attacking my Display Drivers and attempting to convince me my old Laptop is past its prime?

Maybe it's your backlighting. My friend's LCD monitor has trouble for about 30 seconds when it is first turned on (or comes back on from sleep mode).
Gun control is like trying to solve drunk driving by making it harder for sober people to own cars.

Any accident you can walk away from is one I can laugh at.

OP is three days ago.

I sent Alma a TG when I saw this in Technical. Backlight in "old" laptops is flurorescent, goes 'on the blink' like any fluorescent when it's failing. The CRT/LCD switch would power-down the backlight, then power it back up. Just like mains-power fluorescent, that sometimes fixes it for a while.

Test for this is whether there is a faint image on the screen after it goes blank. Look at it from different angles. If the desktop is there (very faintly) and responds to input then it's the backlight failing.

Solution is to get a fluorescent tube from some other old laptop (same screen size) and bung 'er in. If that doesn't work, strip the back of the screen (top lid of laptop) and use laptop while facing fire.

We neanderthals had laptops too you know.

It's the backlight--it's in the process of burning out. I experienced the exact same thing with my undergrad laptop.
