What? That is not at all how mental illness works, friend. And please, let's not start name-calling! Allow me to explain. People do indeed have specific mental illnesses! In America, the standard text used to diagnose mental illnesses is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Just a few examples of specific mental illnesses: I personally suffer from Tourette's Syndrome, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

Elliott Rodger was not mentally ill. There is a (relatively speaking) logical connection between his beliefs and his actions. He hated women for rejecting him, therefore he sought revenge on women through violent means. A mentally ill person, on the other hand, would not have any sort of logical connection between their beliefs and their actions. Someone suffering from a mental illness might perpetrate a mass shooting because they were convinced that they were receiving special, secret messages through their television sets telling them that they were possessed by the devil. (Seriously, I work in mental health services, and I once had a case like this. The man didn't perpetrate a mass shooting, but he did stab someone.)
