Assad isn't "killing everyone". Syria has had democratic elections, and the opposition got angry and started to rebel. That's how it started.

All nations require some degree of popular legitimacy, and right now, Assad has none. It isn't going to be peaceful or stable, we support Assad, he's still getting toppled. The people don't want a Russian Shah.

Russia is actively bombing Jabhat al-Nusra (Y'know the ones thats kidnapping the US funded and trained rebels and stealing their equipment!) and the Islamic Front, both of whom has allegiance to Al-Qaeda and as of 2015, al-Nusra is cooperating with other Islamist and jihadist rebel groups ( but at few times the FSA)

So much for those 'other opposition groups' no?

But yes Russia has actually bombed Raqqa and other IS positions noteably ones by Palmyra.

Well even Russia was against the "gassing" but t hey gave up those weapons under the orders of the UN. we are all still to point 0 so nothing changed.

He still had more power than Assad, and used that power effectively. The only reason he stopped being president was his death. Assad does not have the power to control his country's policies, thus is not an effective dictator. Most of the power is, still, in the parliament.

Assad was elected via popular vote. Rigged or not, the practice itself was more democratic.
