Assad isn't "killing everyone". Syria has had democratic elections, and the opposition got angry and started to rebel. That's how it started.

Those elections were actually a farce due most of the country's eligeble voters can't actually vote due to umm war?

As opposed to indiscriminate gassing of the previous government?

We aren't going to support the Islamists or Assad.

Russia is actively bombing Jabhat al-Nusra (Y'know the ones thats kidnapping the US funded and trained rebels and stealing their equipment!) and the Islamic Front, both of whom has allegiance to Al-Qaeda and as of 2015, al-Nusra is cooperating with other Islamist and jihadist rebel groups ( but at few times the FSA)

So much for those 'other opposition groups' no?

But yes Russia has actually bombed Raqqa and other IS positions noteably ones by Palmyra.

This as well^

Assad's coalition won a fair majority. The opposition was lead by a swastika-using Israel-bombing far right group.

Very fair. Assad even allowed two other candidates to run in the 2014 presidential election.

The Presidential election holds no true meaning in the country's affairs, as the President has limited power compared to the parliament

Reminds me my country's polticians. On PASOK many times they had elections for party's leader with one candidate.

The elections were a farce as I would once again.

Any chance we (the west) could bomb Assad and tell Russia that we're just bombing ISIS? Would I be right to think we should try to annoy the Russians more; since they keep on breaking international law, and they seem only to understand strength, and don't we have more strength than they do because we won the Cold War?

However in accordance with my open-door policy the converse does not apply: they still impact Ausitoria's canon.

Atleast that was only for the party, not for the entire country.

Finland had the same president for 27 years, and the president frequently dismantled the parliament to suit the necessities to avoid war with USSR. Nobody has ever called Finland a presidential dictatorship.

He still had more power than Assad, and used that power effectively. The only reason he stopped being president was his death. Assad does not have the power to control his country's policies, thus is not an effective dictator. Most of the power is, still, in the parliament.

Wasn't he always elected by an electoral college? That's a little different.

Yes, which makes Kekkonen even more dictatorial.

Assad was elected via popular vote. Rigged or not, the practice itself was more democratic.
