Corbyn's actions seems to reflect the opinions of the poor and vulnerable: the welfare cuts by the Conservative government have made a lot of people a lot less proud of being British. And me fleeing alone to Paris on 22-24 July 2015 really says a lot about how exasperated we are.

Gonna go out a limb here but I'm going to put my money on it not being about that at all.

You know, might just be something to do with the fact he's a republican.

It's not a bad thing, I'm a republican. I don't sing the national anthem, because I don't believe in god and I'd rather not have a queen. But he's not making some principled stand for the poor and the needy by not singing the world's worst fucking national anthem.

It's pretty shite, our anthem should be Rule Britannia in my opinion. However, when Corbyn has the eye of the media on him, the smart thing to do would be to be PR-savy and just sing the bloody thing. No one will know that his dartboard at home has a picture of Liz stuck on the bullseye.

Better the Morning Star has a moan than the BBC objectively reporting that Corbyn didn't sing the national anthem. As Mandleson would put it.

I'm not even a hardcore republican and I wouldn't sing it. For a national anthem, it's atrocious.

It is a good song, just not a very good national anthem.

Rule Britannia would definitely make a better alternative.

To be honest, I'd prefer it if our national anthem was more about the country and the people that inhabit it than the hereditary head of state.

Did he not stop to think "I'm at the Battle of Britain memorial service to pay respects to, and remember those who died defending the country. Could I maybe put my opinions aside for a brief moment and mouth along to the song for once?"

You don't have to sing an anthem to show respect for those who fought and died. He showed plenty of respect and stood in graceful silence during that little bit.

Are we going to criticise everyone that fails to sing the national anthem? Because I have seen some sporting figures that need to be flogged if that is the case.

No. We're just going to criticise Corbyn because he's not allowed to have opinions that differ to the ruling classes'.

I mean it's not like he went off slagging the Queen or anything. He just didn't sing the anthem during the small portion where it was sung. What is honestly more disrespectful is all the attention being put on Corbyn rather than on the memorial service for the pilots their sacrifices.

I don't think Rule Britannia would be a good anthem. The chorus is good, but the verses aren't the most obvious national anthem material. Imagine an entire football stadium trying to sing "when Briiiiiiit'n fuh-huh-huh-huh-irst at Heeaaavn'sc'mmaaaaand". How about I Vow To Thee My Country?

Malgrave wrote:Are we going to criticise everyone that fails to sing the national anthem? Because I have seen some sporting figures that need to be flogged if that is the case.

They usually are. Although I seem to remember Roy Hodgson told them all to sing it a couple of years back, so it hasn't been in the news for a while.

The best anthem would be Land of Hope and Glory. C'mon.
Shamhnan Insir wrote:Did he not stop to think "I'm at the Battle of Britain memorial service to pay respects to, and remember those who died defending the country. Could I maybe put my opinions aside for a brief moment and mouth along to the song for once?"

Those who died in the Battle of Britain, were fighting for the freedom that Corbyn exercised by choosing not to sing the national anthem. He was perfectly respectful, standing silently, as an atheist republican.

Seeing as everyone cares so much about Corbyn singing God Save The Queen I will do it for him
God save our gracious Queen
Long live our noble Queen
God save the Queen
Send her victorious
Happy and glorious
Long to reign over us
God save the Queen

O Lord our God arise
Scatter her enemies
And make them fall
Confound their politics
Frustrate their knavish tricks
On Thee our hopes we fix
God save us all

Thy choicest gifts in store
On her be pleased to pour
Long may she reign
May she defend our laws
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice
God save the Queen

Not in this land alone
But be God's mercies known
From shore to shore
Lord make the nations see
That men should brothers be
And form one family
The wide world over

From every latent foe
From the assassins blow
God save the Queen
O'er her thine arm extend
For Britain's sake defend
Our mother, prince, and friend
God save the Queen
